Orf's Pair Of Goals Lifts Sycamores To Soccer Victory Over Akron

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Behind a pair of goals from Maddie Orf, the Indiana State Sycamores earned a hard fought 2-0 victory over visiting Akron on a rainy Friday night inside Memorial Stadium.

Indiana State improves to 2-1 on the season, including a perfect mark of 2-0 at home. The Sycamores have not allowed a single goal in two full games at home. Akron falls to 1-2 on the season.

Maddie Orf led the way for the Sycamores with four shots, including two on goal and the pair of goals. Katie Sullivan added a shot on goal while Natalie Kesserling has a pair of Caitlin Glascott one shot from long distance. Brittany San Roman pitched another shutout at home and made seven saves in the contest.

Orf scored her second goal of the game in the 69th minute when she took a corner kick from Katie Wells. Orf used the header for the second time in the match as she found the back left corner of the net to push Indiana State ahead 2-0.

In the 78th minute, goalkeeper Brittany San Roman made a spectacular save in the corner of the net off a shot from Akron's Stephanie Wiles to preserve the shutout. Indiana State's Natalie Kesserling had two good looks at the net minutes later but two nice saves from Akron's Annabelle Hegeman kept the Sycamore advantage at 2-0. 

Indiana State scored first in the match when Maddie Orf's header caught the back of the net just 6:53 into the match. Pam Silies found Orf off a long pass from the right side which Orf received eight yards in front of the net and her header went right past Akron's Annabelle Hegeman for the score. It was Orf's first goal of the season.

Despite holding the lead, Indiana State trailed in total shots by a 6-2 margin as well as shots on goal at 3-2. The Zips also held a 3-0 advantage in corner kicks. Indiana State's Kayla Schrubb received a yellow card 29 minutes into the match.

 Indiana State returns to action on Sunday, August 28 when they host IUPUI at 1:00 p.m. (ET) inside Memorial Stadium. Admission to the game is free of charge and will be televised world wide on The Valley On ESPN3.
