IUPUI Slips Past Indiana State In Final Minutes

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Indiana State and IUPUI locked horns on a steamy afternoon at Memorial Stadium and the Jags used a late goal to slip past the Sycamores by the score of 2-1.

The Sycamores fell to 2-2 on the season while IUPUI improved to 3-1.

Kayla Schrubb led the Sycamores with two shots as the Sycamores put nine attempts toward the net, with three of those coming in goal. IUPUI countered with 14 shots and five on goal. The Sycamores had the upper hand in corner kicks by a 3-2 margin.

Brittany San Roman allowed her first goals of the season at home but she posted three saves. IUPUI's Catherine Schmidt made two saves and allowed one Indiana State goal.

The two teams battled to a scoreless tie for most of the first half until Kayla Trinka netted a breakthrough for the Sycamores as she picked up a pass from Katie Sullivan off an earlier rebounded shot just three yards in front of the goal. Trinka kept the ball down low to the ground and snuck the ball just past the goalkeeper's left.

In the first half, the shots were level for both teams with five each, including a pair from Trinka. San Roman recorded one save for the Sycamores in goal while Catherine Schmidt had a pair of saves for the Jaguars. IUPUI had the lone first half corner kick.

IUPUI leveled the game in the 58th minute when Hayley Shelton notched her third goal of the season for the Jaguars on a rebound from Maryna Clark, which ended up finding the back of the net on a kick that bounced once off the ground right in front of the net.

The game continued on in the heat until the very end when in the 89th minute, Clark saved a ball from going out of bounds with a high kick towards the right corner of the goal. Tori Minnich was there to deflect the ball on a diving attempt in the back of the net as IUPUI took a 2-1 lead. They were able to control possession for the remaining minute and walked away with the victory.

Indiana State is back in action on Thursday, September 1 when they travel to Northwestern. Kickoff is set for 8:00 p.m. (ET).
