TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Indiana State's
Brenton Scott and
Matt Van Scyoc rode hot shooting performances and each eclipsed the 20-point scoring mark as the Sycamores downed No. 15 Butler in yet another close scoring affair by the score of 72-71 in front of 5,559 fans inside electric Hulman Center.
The Sycamores won for the third consecutive time and improved to 5-4 on the season while Butler lost for the first time this season and fell to 8-1. Indiana State won its fifth game against a nationally-ranked opponent under seventh-year head
Greg Lansing -- a new record and its first since a 2013 victory at No. 21 Notre Dame. The victory came almost 10 years to day from another big win for the Sycamores -- a 72-64 triumph over No. 15 Butler on December 9, 2006. That also marked ISU's last victory over the Bulldogs, as this win snapped a four-game losing skid to Butler, in a series that has dated over 100 years.
Brenton Scott and Matt Van Sycoc each went over the 20-point scoring mark in the game since January 24, 2016 when Scott and
Devonte Brown did it at home against Evansville. Scott led the way with 25 points while Van Scyoc got hot late en route to scoring a career-high 23 points after knocking down six 3-pointers. Scott now has 996 points in his career and is just four away from becoming the 38th member of the Indiana State Basketball 1,000 Point Club and the 13th either coached or recruited by Lansing. Scott now has 160 career 3-pointers which is fourth on ISU's all-time list and is just one shy of tying Eddie Bird for third. Interestingly, today is Eddie's older brother Larry's birthday and it proved to be a quite a present for the Legend with the Sycamores win. Scott also tied a career-high with nine rebounds in the win.
Also in double figures scoring was
Everett Clemons with 10 points, four assists, three rebounds and two steals. Clemons was 5-of-6 from the field.
Brandon Murphy scored nine points and pulled down 10 rebounds in the victory off the bench to go with three blocked shots.
The Sycamores hit 48.1 percent of their shots in the game (26-of-54) and connected on 10 3-pointers. ISU limited Butler to 25-of-55 shooting (45.5 percent), but the Bulldogs countered with a 10-of-18 (55.6 percent) effort from long range. ISU won the battle of the boards by a 37-29 margin and held a 13-12 edge in second chance points. ISU found success also in transition by holding a 9-4 edge in fast break points.
Butler took a 48-42 lead on a 3-pointer from Andrew Chrabascz with 12:54 remaining but the Sycamores scored five in a row to climb back into it on a lay-up from Scott and then a 3-pointer by Van Scyoc. After Baldwin and Wideman gave the Bulldogs a 52-47 advantage with just over 10 minutes to go, the Sycamores got a big offensive rebound from
Niels Bunschoten and converted a 3-pointer from Van Scyoc to get within 52-50. A pair of Chrabascz free throws made it 54-50 and then
Laquarious Paige found Murphy down low to trim the Bulldog lead down to 54-52 with 7:39 on the clock.
After the Bulldogs took a 55-52 edge, Scott hit a 3-pointer off the assist from Clemons to knot the game at 55 with 6:29 to go. Baldwin hit a jumper to reestablish a two point edge before the Sycamores scored seven in a row on a Van Scyoc free throw, a tip-in from Scott, a jumper from Scott and then a steal and lay-up from Clemons for the 62-57 lead with 3:32 remaining. Chrabascz connected on a 3-pointer on the next Butler possession to trim the lead down to two points, but Van Scyoc countered with a triple of his own with 2:48 left for the 65-60 lead.
After a pair of Tyler Lewis free throws got Butler within 65-62, Van Scyoc remaining hit another 3-pointer at the 2:13 mark and the Sycamores led 68-62. The Bulldogs would get within a possession, but Van Scyoc drained his third 3-pointer in the final three minutes with 43 seconds on the clock and ISU led 71-66. A pair of free throws by Lewis with 12 seconds left knotted the score at 71. Scott was fouled going to the basket with 1.5 seconds remaining and he hit the first free throw for the 72-71 lead. A full court desperation heave from Butler went unanswered and set off a wild celebration on the Hulman Center floor.
A 3-pointer from Scott with 9:59 left in the first half staked the Sycamores to an 18-12 lead, but Sean McDermott answered with a 3-pointer and Van Scyoc came over the top with a triple of his own for the 21-15 lead with just over nine minutes on the clock. A lay-up from McDermott with 2:54 remaining trimmed the Sycamores lead down to 26-25, but
Emondre Rickman scored off the assist from
Donovan Franklin and Clemons scored on a driving lay-up for the 30-25 lead.
Brenton Scott hit a pair of free throws with 56 seconds left for the 32-28 first half lead and a late bucket by Butler was waved off due to basket interference as the Sycamores held the four-point lead at the break. Scott led the way at the half with nine points.
Butler had three scorers in double figures, led by 18 points from Andrew Chrabascz.
Indiana State remains at home to take on Western Kentucky on Sunday, December 11 at 4:30 p.m. (ET) inside Hulman Center.Â
