Sycamores Fall In Valley Opener To Wichita State

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Indiana State battled Wichita State down to the final moments but the visiting Shockers earned a hard fought 80-72 victory in the Missouri Valley Conference opener for both clubs inside Hulman Center.

The Sycamores fell to 6-7, 0-1 MVC while Wichita State improved to 11-3, 1-0 MVC.

Brenton Scott led the way with 14 points and added seven rebounds while Matt Van Scyoc tallied 11 points as he hit a trio of 3-pointers. Off the bench, freshman Jordan Barnes made a splash in his Valley debut as he tallied 10 points, hit three 3-pointers and added four-point play. Senior Everett Clemons tallied five points but had a career-best 11 assists and led the team with eight rebounds.

One of the deciding factors in the game, Wichita State owned a 47-30 edge on the glass, including a 16-7 advantage on offensive rebounds. The Shockers scored 19 second chance points in the the game. The Sycamores shared the ball the well with 17 assists on 22 made field goals. Indiana State hit 22-of-56 shots (39.3 percent) while Wichita State made 29-of-61 (47.5 percent).

The Shockers scored on their opening possession, but Van Scyoc countered with a 3-pointer for the quick lead. Indiana State enjoyed an early 8-0 run which began with an unconventional 3-point play by Clemons as he made the first free throw, missed the second, but grabbed his own rebound and laid it in for the 10-09 lead. The run was extended by a triple from Donovan Franklin and then a pair of Franklin charity tosses with 13:07 on the clock for a 15-9 lead. Wichita State countered with six in a row to tie the game, before Niels Bunschoten connected on a 3-pointer for the 18-15 lead with 10:51 remaining.

Wichita State would take a 25-20 lead, but the Sycamores got back-to-back jumpers from Bunschoten and Emondre Rickman as well as a Scott free throw to knot the game at 25. Darral Willis, Jr., converted a conventional 3-point play with 4:05 remaining for the 32-26 lead before a jumper from Laqarious Paige got the Sycamores within 32-30 with just over three and half to go. After Willis scored again for Wichita State, Paige hit a 3-pointer and then Franklin scored inside for the 35-34 Sycamore lead. Van Scyoc hit a 3-pointer with 46 seconds remaining to tie the game at 38 heading into the locker room. Franklin led the way for the Sycamores in the first half with seven points.

The Shockers scored the first three points of the second half before Scott and Clemons scored back-to-back for the 42-41 lead. A 10-1 Shocker run staked them to a 58-47 lead with 12:30 to go on a lay-up from Markis McDuffie. Scott ended the string with a 3-pointer at the 11:45 mark before two free throws from Willis, Jr., gave the Shockers a 60-50 lead with just under 10 minutes remaining. 3-pointers from Van Scyoc and Barnes whittled the Wichita State lead down to 62-58 as the clock ticked under the eight minute mark. After the Shockers took a 67-60 lead, Barnes converted the rare four-point play with 4:28 to go and ISU was within 67-64.

Another 3-pointer from Barnes answered a dunk by McDuffie as ISU was down just 69-67 with 3:42 remaining. The two teams traded free throws before a lay-up by Willis, Jr., and then a 3-pointer from McDuffie reestablished a 76-69 lead for the Shockers with 1:25 remainin. Scott hit a pair of free throws with 42 seconds on the clock to get within 76-72, but four charity tosses from the Shockers closed out to 80-72 Wichita State victory.

Darral Willis, Jr., posted a double-double with 25 points and 10 rebounds while Markis McDuffie added 22 points.

Indiana State is back in action on Saturday, December 31 when they begin a two-game road swing at Missouri State. Tip-off is set for Noon (ET) and can be seen live on FSN Midwest, Comcast Sportsnet Chicago as well as The Valley On ESPN3 (outside fo the league's five-state footprint).
