Missouri State Clips Sycamores In Overtime

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Indiana State battled back from down as many as 11 points late in the second half and used a Brandon Murphy dunk with less than one second remaining to force their fourth overtime game of the season before falling, 81-75 at Missouri State in front of 4,400 fans inside JQH Arena.

The Sycamores fell to 6-8, 0-2 MVC while the Bears improved to 11-4, 2-0 MVC. Indiana State has had nine of their 14 games this season decided by one possession or in overtime.

Brenton Scott led the way for the Sycamores with 22 points as he tied career highs with six 3-pointers made as well as nine rebounds. Everett Clemons tallied 11 points to go with five assists while Matt Van Scyoc overcame foul trouble to score 12 points in only 19 minutes of action.

Indiana State's comeback was led by its second half effort on the defensive end of the floor as they held MSU to 12-of-35 shooting (34.3 percent) in the second half. However, into the overtime, the Bears hit 3-of-5 shots (60 percent) while Indiana State only made 1-of-9 from the field (11.1 percent). Missouri State held a 52-36 edge on the glass, but only a 19-4 advantage in second chance points.

The Bears led by six points with just over four minutes remaining when Scott ended a lengthy Bears possession with a long rebound of his own. He found Clemons in transition to make it a four point game. After another defensive stop, the Sycamores got a lay-up inside from Emondre Rickman off the feed from Clemons to make it 68-66 in favor of the Bears with 3:05 remaining. Scott then hit a big shot from long range -- his career-high tying sixth 3-pointer of the game -- with 2:25 to go for the 69-68 lead. Johnson hit 1-of-2 free throws to knot the game at 69. After each team traded defensive stops, Van Scyoc went to the charity stripe with 1:19 to go and hit 1-of-2 for the 70-69 advantage. On the other end, Johnson was fouled and hit both of his free throws as the Bears led 71-70 with just over one minute on the clock.

Johnson found himself at the free throw line yet again with 15.5 seconds on the clock. He missed the first and then ISU called their final timeout of the contest before his second attempt and the Bears still up by a point. Scott found Murphy wide open underneath the basket with .6 seconds remaining and threw down a monstrous dunk to knot the game at 72. It forced Indiana State into its fourth overtime game of the season and the second in a row against the Bears in Springfield.

Johnson continued his strong outing by scoring first in overtime to put the Bears ahead by two points. MSU would score the first six points of the extra frame before Brandon Murphy hit a lay-up with 1:56 on the clock to get within 78-74. The Sycamores got a stop and Clemons hit 1-of-2 attempts at the free throw line to make it a 3-point Bears lead with just over one minute to go. Dequon Miller and Jarred Dixon each hit free throws down the stretch for the 81-75 victory for the Bears in overtime.

Missouri State scored first in the game before Matt Van Scyoc drained a 3-pointer to give the Sycamores a quick 3-2 advantage. The Bears took a 9-5 lead before Van Scyoc continued his hot start with another 3-pointer at the 16:35 mark to trim their lead down to one point. Laquarious Paige made it a perfect 3-of-3 start from 3-point range on the next possession to tie the contest at 11. Chris Kendrix staked the Bears to a three-point lead but consecutive jumpers by Paige and then a conventional 3-point play by Clemons have the Sycamores to an 18-16 advantage with just over 10 minutes left in the opening stanza.

The Bears would answer the Sycamores run with a 6-0 spurt of their own before Scott righted the ship with a trifecta at the 8:05 mark to whittled the lead down to 22-21. A Niels Bunschoten jumper with just over four minutes to go trimmed the Bears lead down to 29-27. Missouri State scored the next eight points to run its lead out to 10 points. Bronson Kessinger converted a lay-up at the halftime buzzer as the Bears took a 37-29 advantage into the locker room. Matt Van Scyoc and Brenton Scott led the way for the Sycamores in the first half with six points each.

Van Scyoc who battled early foul trouble, scored on a lay-up on the first possession and then Scott added a 3-pointer in transition to get the Sycamores within 37-34 with less than a minute elapsed in the second half. Paige hit a 3-pointer with 17:26 on the clock to get within 40-37. Scott twice a pair of free throws around the 16 minutes mark which both times trimmed the Bears lead down to two points -- the second time at 43-41.

MSU ran the lead back out to four points, but Scott hit his fourth 3-pointer of the contest at the 15:05 mark to get within 45-44. ISU retook the lead on a pair of Everett Clemons charity tosses at the 14 minute mark for the 46-45 edge. The two teams traded baskets, with Rickman scoring inside as the clock ticked towards 13 minutes for the 48-47 lead. Missouri State then scored seven points in a row as they took a 54-48 lead with 11:42 on the clock and forced the Sycamores to burn a timeout. Niels Bunschoten beat the shot clock with 11:13 remaining to get within 56-50. But the Bears answered with five in a row to take an 11-point lead their largest of the game at the 9:18 mark which forced ISU to burn another timeout down 61-50.

Paige stopped the bleeding with a 3-pointer with just under nine minutes remaining to get within eight points. After a stop, Clemons hit one-of-two-free throws and the Bears lead had shrunk to 61-54. After the Bears were whistled for a charge, Scott connected on his fifth 3-pointer of the contest to draw ISU within 61-57 with 7:43 remaining. The Bears scored again before Van Sycoc answered with a 3-pointer of his own to make it a one possession game at 63-60. Alize Johnson answered with a second chance bucket as the Bears retook a five-point advantage.
