Sycamores Outlast Eastern Illinois In Non-Conference Finale

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Indiana State rallied from down 13 points and then outlasted visiting Eastern Illinois for a thrilling 88-85 double overtime victory inside Hulman Center to wrap up non-conference play.

Indiana State improved to 6-6 on the year while Eastern Illinois saw a three-game winning streak snapped and fell to 8-5. It was the 90th all-time win for the Sycamores against Eastern Illinois -- the most victories over an opponent in program history. It was the first win over EIU inside Hulman Center since 2011 and the first in the series since a road victory against the Panthers in 2013.

Brenton Scott led the way with 23 points and pulled down seven rebounds. Five Sycamores reached double figures scoring as Brandon Murphy posted a double-double with 14 points and a career-high 12 rebounds. Niels Bunschoten added 13 points while Everett Clemons added 13 points to go with seven rebounds. Freshman Jordan Barnes provided a second half spark as finished with 11 points, a career-best six assists and five rebounds. It was the first time since a double overtime contest at Loyola on January 30, 2016 that five Sycamores reached double figures scoring.

Indiana State had a season-best 55 rebounds in the victory. It was the first time they went over the 50 rebound mark since a January 27, 2016 contest against Missouri State when they had 51. The Sycamores have now seen eight of the first 12 games this season go into overtime or decided by a single possession.

Murphy scored on a put back with 3:59 left in the double overtime and then Scott hit a jumper on the next possession to take an 80-76 lead.  A pair of Clemons charity tosses with 2:05 left stretched the lead out to 82-76. Cornell Johnson answered with a 3-pointer, but Murphy two charity tossses with 1:18 to go gave ISU an 84-79 advantage. Four free throws from the Panthers made it a one-point game until Scott hit the biggest shot of the contest, a 3-pointer from the top of the key with 20 seconds remaining for the 87-83 lead. Demetrius McReynolds answered with a lay-up to trim the edge down to just two points. ISU turned the ball over, but the Panthers gave it right back on a travelling call. Clemons hit 1-of-2 free throws with two seconds remaining for the 88-85 lead. The hail mary was not answered for the Panthers and the Sycamores took the win.

Montell Goodwin hit a 3-pointer with 3:49 remaining int he first overtime, but Scott answered with a triple of his own to tie the game at 70 with 2:51 on the clock. Mussa Dama hit a jumper and after an empty Sycamore possession, McReynolds hit one for the 74-70 lead with 1:48 remaining. Scott connected on a driving lay-up and was fouled. He missed the free throw but Murphy grabbed the offensive rebound and after being fouled, hit 1-of-2 free throws to trim the deficit down to 74-73. McReynolds scored again with 1:05 remaining to stretch the lead ou to 76-73, but Matt Van Scyoc hit a 3-pointer with 49 seconds left to tie the game at 76. Scott missed a jumper to send the game into a second overtime period.

A 3-pointer from Casey Teson with 14:59 remaining in regulation stretched the Panther lead out to 49-36 and capped a 7-0 run. Barnes connected on a 3-pointer to kick start the Sycamores 7-0 run which ended on a Bunschoten lay-up with 11:50 to go as the Sycamores trailed 49-43. After a Panthers bucket, the Sycamores embarked on a 5-0 run capped by a Murphy lay-up with 8:46 on the clock as ISU trailed 51-50. Two charity tosses from Duma gave the Panthers a 53-50 advantage, but the Sycamores got a free throw from Scott and took the lead themselves on a Bunschoten 3-pointer with 6:08 remaining for the 54-53 lead. That started a 9-0 run which ended on a Clemons conventional 3-point play with 4:46 to go for the 60-53 advantage.

A steal by Murphy and a fast break lay-up by Clemons with just over three minutes remaining staked the Sycamores to a 64-56 lead. Consecutive 3-pointers from Eastern Illinois ran the lead down to 64-62, but Barnes hit a jumper with 21 seconds remaining for a 66-62 edge. Goodwin's lay-up with 12 seconds remaining made it a two-point lead before Scott hit a free throw with eight seconds to go for the 67-64 lead. ISU fouled with three seconds to go and Goodwin hit the first to make it a two point game. He then missed the second and a tip-in by Dama with 1.5 seconds remaining leveled the score at 67 and forced the first overtime.

Emondre Rickman earned the start at center and scored on the Sycamores' first possession for a 2-0 lead. ISU would score the first six points of the game, but EIU tallied the next 15 for a nine-point advantage before a dunk from Murphy and a 3-pointer from Van Scyoc trimmed the deficit down to 15-11 with 14:13 left before the half. Goodwin connected on a 3-pointer with 13 seconds remaining in the first half as the Panthers took a 39-31 lead into the half. Scott led Indiana State with eight points in the opening stanza.

The Panthers had four players reach double figures scoring as Demetrius McReynolds tallied 25 points and Montell Goodwin added 21. Mussa Dama had 13 points and 18 rebounds in the contest.

Indiana State begins Missouri Valley Conference play on Wednesday, December 28 when they host defending champion Wichita State at 7 pm (ET) inside Hulman Center.
