TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Indiana State and Illinois State will resume its 11-year dual meet rivalry on Friday evening, as the Sycamores and Redbirds clash for the 12th iteration of the Coughlan/Malloy Cup at the Terre Haute Double-Dual at Rose-Hulman's Sports and Recreation Center. The other half of this double-dual meet will pit Rose-Hulman against fellow Division III foe Manchester University.
Since it began in 2005, Indiana State is 10-1 in the series against Illinois State – whose only victory came in 2006 in Terre Haute. In fact, the Sycamore men and women have only lost once each in separate competition against the Redbird men and women – the men in 2006 and the women in 2012.
Indiana State returns all but five event champions from last season's squad, which includes all six of ISU's returning All-Americans from the 2015 season (quarter and half-miler Alethia Marrero (x2), pole vaulter Kimyanna Rudolph, distance runner David Timlin, hurdler Adarius Washington and sprinter Katie Wise). The Sycamores are already off to a stellar start to the indoor season after a very strong open at the Hoosier Open in December. Twelve Sycamores still rank in the national top-50 from times or marks recorded in Bloomington that Friday – including three within the national-qualifying top-16.
Chief among those is All-American hurdler Adarius Washington, who ranks fourth in the NCAA in the 60 meter hurdles. Washington was the top-collegiate finisher at IU that day with a strong time of 7.88 seconds – which is still 0.11 seconds off his career-best 7.77 ran at last year's NCAA Indoor Championships, where he finished fifth overall.
However, the Redbirds come into Terre Haute tomorrow off to a strong start as well. Illinois State currently claims six top-50 times or marks itself. The highest of those comes from top-notch distance runner Ryan Rutherford, who returns to competition this year after sitting out the 2015 season. Rutherford and Sycamore All-American John Mascari ran one of the all-time great 10K races at the 2014 MVC Outdoor Championships in Carbondale, Ill., but fans will be denied a rematch as Mascari is sitting out the 2016 season due to the resurgence of a back injury.
Competition will begin at 6 p.m. with the beginning of the field events. Admission is free to all spectators, and live results will be available HERE.
