TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Former Sycamore Colin Rea has earned his big league promotion on Tuesday, August 11th. Rea has been called up to the San Diego Padres from Triple-A El Paso and will make his big league debut against the Cincinnati Reds at Petco Park. Rea will start in place of Odrisamer Despaigne who has been moved to the bullpen.
In Triple-A El Paso, Rea earned a 2-2 record and a 4.39 ERA in six starts. In Double-A San Antonio, he started 12 games, going 3-2 and posting an impressive 1.08 ERA. Rea also made an appearance in the MiLB Futures game, going 0.2 innings where he struck out the final batter of the game. Rea is the No. 2 on the Padres Top 30 prospect list, and the No. 1 pitching prospect.
Rea last pitched for the Sycamores in 2011. That season he earned an 8-4 record, and a 3.68 ERA in 18 appearances, including 15 starts. Rea also notched a save during his team-high 95.1 innings pitched and held opponents to a .204 average against. Rea was drafted by the Padres in the 12th round of the 2011 June Amateur Draft.
