MACOMB, Ill. – Elly Freesmeier proved to be too much for the Western Illinois Fighting Leathernecks on Sunday afternoon at John MacKenzie Alumni field in Macomb, Ill. Indiana State defeated the Leathernecks 2-1 in the final nonconference match of the 2015 season. Indiana State improves to 5-7 on the season, and Western Illinois falls to 1-8.
Freesmeier earned her first career assist and scored what proved to be the game-winning goal during the match. Freesmeier who fired two shots, both on frame, assisted the first goal and scored the second. Maddie Orf scored her fifth goal of the season in the 41st minute of action. Orf tallied four shots, with three on goal. Sydney Lovelace earned her team-leading fourth assist in the contest.
Lovelace and Maddie Schaak each took three shots in the match. Casidy Simonis added two shots, while Kate Johnson and Sydney Loesing each added a shot.
Brittany San Roman played the full match in net and earned her fifth win of the season after saving five shots.
The match was one of the most physical matches of the season. Both teams earned 17 fouls in the match, with each earning a card. Western Illinois earned a yellow card in the 82nd minute of action, while ISU's Loesing earned a red card in the 60th minute as ISU played the final 30 minutes with ten players. The red card is the first of Loesing's career.
Indiana State took the lead in the 41st minute of action. Freesmeier passed off to Orf from the top of the box. Orf took a shot from 15 yards out to beat the keeper to the far post to give ISU the first lead of the match.
The Sycamores scored their second goal of the match in the 44th minute. ISU's Sydney Lovelace drew a foul seven yards off the attacking end line. Lovelace played the ball in front of the net where Freesmeier was there for the finish. ISU took a 2-0 lead into halftime.
The Fighting Leathernecks cut into the Sycamore lead in the 49th minute. Skylar Jessop received a pass from Mary Street and was able to get behind the Sycamore backline. Jessop fired a shot and beat San Roman to the left post.
Indiana State soccer returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 10th as it plays host to MVC rival Missouri State Bears at 1:00 p.m. at Memorial Stadium. The match will be ISU's senior day as we will honor our seniors who have impacted our program in a variety of ways.
