What You Need To Know

Indiana State opened up the season 4-0 at its own Holiday Inn Classic on August 29-30.  ISU swept Wright State and Akron before defeating Chicago State and North Carolina A&T, 3-1, to earn the tournament title.

The 4-0 start marks the best start since 2002 and best under current head coach Traci Dahl-Skinner. ISU went 4-0 in 2002 before losing its fifth match of the season.

Sophomore outside hitter Bree Spangler earned tournament MVP honors by racking up 46 kills in four matches (3.29 per game). She recorded double-digit kills in three of four matches, including a weekend high 17 against North Carolina A&T. The Coldwater, Mich. native also posted a double-double in the season opener against Wright State with 11 kills and 10 digs. She tallied a .270 kill percentage in four matches while also collecting 45 total digs and four blocks. She posted a weekend best .361 against the Aggies. Spangler also recorded 10 digs against North Carolina A&T and dished out three assists against Chicago State.

Two freshmen earned starts in all four games for the Sycamores at the Holiday Inn Classic. Defensive specialist Danielle Waedekin and libero Stephanie Bindernagel helped out the ISU back row in their first collegiate weekend.

Junior middle back Cassandra Willis led ISU in opening weekend with 13 blocks (.93 per game) and 41 total kills (2.93 per game) while hitting .574. Sophomore middle blocker Kynedi Nalls also had a standout weekend where she hit .423 with 37 total kills (2.64) along with six blocks.

ISU's defense held its opponents to just a .093 hitting percentage on the weekend, averaging just 8.79 opponent kills per game.

ISU extended its win streak in season openers to five with a 3-0 victory over Wright State in the 2014 Holiday Inn Classic.
