TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Indiana State women's basketball recorded its fifth-straight victory with a 62-43 win over the University of Indianapolis on Sunday afternoon at Hulman Center. The Sycamores improve to 7-1 on the 2014 season.
Senior forward Chelsea Small led ISU on the afternoon with 14 points including a 3-for-4 clip from behind the arc. Senior forward Jasmine Grier also notched double-figures with 12 points including three 3-pointers.
Every available Indiana State player saw minutes in the contest, as junior forward Racheal Mahan also eight points and two boards while redshirt sophomore Joyea Marshall came off the bench to grab a team-high five rebounds.
Senior forward Lashonda Littleton added six points off the bench, as non-starters again contributed 31 points in the victory. Senior guard Natasha Zurek and redshirt junior guard Cierra Ceazer each dished out a game-high three assists. Senior guard Stephanie Wittman also recorded a game-high three steals.
As a team, Indiana State went 42.3 percent from the field and 40.0 percent from 3-point range. The Sycamores also picked up a combined 10 steals and forced UIndy to commit 34 turnovers.
On the glass, Indiana State was out-rebounded, 31-26, but won on the offensive side with 12 boards. It also got 34 points off turnovers and 18 second chance points in the win.
The Greyhounds (2-4) kept it close in the first half, even taking the lead on four separate occasions. A good Kelly Walters bucket with 12:02 left in the half gave UIndy its first lead as Walter ended the afternoon with a game-high 22 points.
Redshirt junior Cierra Ceazer regained the ISU lead with a bucket of her own as the game fell silent for the next three minutes before a Greyhound triple knotted the game up at 14-14.
Indiana State would close the half on a 10-1 run, as the defense held UIndy without a field goal in the final 2:26 of the first period.
In the second half, UIndy came within eight after a Walters 3-pointer cut ISU's lead down to 39-31. Another 7-0 run midway through the second half helped separate the game for Indiana State, as it got buckets by Grier, Zurek and free throws from Littleton and redshirt sophomore Kelsey Dirks.
ISU led by as many as 24 late in the ball game and came away with its second-largest victory of the season.
The Sycamores will close out 2014 with three-straight road game beginning at Saint Louis next Sunday, December 14. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m. ET at Chaifetz Arena.
