Box Score

QUEENS, N.Y. – Indiana State women's basketball knocked off its first ranked opponent in seven years when it upended unbeaten No. 25 St. John's to win the St. John's Chartwells Holiday Classic on Sunday evening in Carnesecca Arena. Indiana State finishes the non-conference season 10-1 overall extend its road win streak to 10 games.

Ten straight road wins ties a program record that was set in 2005-06 and still ranks as the NCAA's second longest active road win streak. In addition, it marks its eighth-straight win of the 2014 season and helps ISU finish non-conference play 6-0 on the road.

Indiana State also posted its first win over a ranked opponent since the 2007-08 season when it defeated No. 17 Vanderbilt on Nov. 14, 2007. The 10-1 mark in non-conference play is also the best in program history, edging the 8-1 record in 1988-89.

Senior forward Jasmine Grier scored a team-high 21 points and six rebounds as she helped Sycamore non-starters account for 54 points on the afternoon. Redshirt sophomore Joyea Marshall also provided a lift off the bench with 12 points and seven boards.

Senior forward Racheal Mahan led on the glass with a season-high 11 rebounds and added nine points. As a team, Indiana State shot just 31.1 percent from the floor (23-for-74), 31.8 percent from beyond the arc (7-for-22) and 76.9 percent from the line (20-for-26).

The Sycamores dished out a combined 13 assists as senior guard Natasha Zurek tied a career-high with five. Redshirt junior Cierra Ceazer led with three steals to go along with nine points, three rebounds and two assists. Sophomore forward Rhagen Smith chipped in four points and a game-high two blocks.

Defense again proved key for Indiana State, locking in for 11 steals and forcing 25 Red Storm turnovers. ISU was narrowly edged on the glass, 51-50, but grabbed 17 offensive rebounds in the victory.

In all, there were 11 lead changes and 13 ties in the contest as ISU had chances to win at the end of regulation and in the first overtime period.

The Sycamores defense took over in the first half, locking down for 10 SJU turnovers and picking up six steals. Indiana State went down four points early but took its first lead on a Ceazer 3-pointer with 15:52 to play.

Newbolt drained a three from the top of the key with 1:10 to play in the opening frame for the final made shot of the half, as ISU led 31-24 lead at the break.

The Sycamores came out cold in the second half, not converting on a shot nearly seven minutes in on a senior guard Travecia Franklin bucket in the paint. However, ISU kept it close in the second frame as it exchanged nine lead changes and knotted it up six times.

Tied at 56-56 after Aliyyah Handford sank a jumper from the free throw line, the Sycamores had a chance to seal the win as Mahan took it to the bucket but missed with 8 seconds to play. Grier came up big with an offensive board and ISU called timeout as it fed the ball back to Mahan as she was fouled. In the bonus, Mahan missed the front end of the one-and-one as Ceazer picked off the Red Storm pass with .8 seconds left on the clock to force the first overtime.

In the first overtime period, Small made the first bucket less than 30 seconds in and Grier earned three free throws after being fouled on the arc. Sinking both, the sycamores took a five point lead with 2:51 remaining in the first overtime frame.

Ceazer drained two free throws in the bonus with 1:22 to play but baskets by SJU's Amber Thompson and Danaejah Grant tied things up with 46 ticks on the clock. Handford, who scored a game-high 27 points, had her last second 3-point shot rim out and force a second overtime.

The Sycamores went to work, outscoring St. John's, 10-4, in the final five minutes. ISU's defense didn't allow a point after Handford hit a bucket at the 3:09 mark as it finished the game on a 10-0 run.

Jasmine Grier was named the Most Valuable Player of the 2014 St. John's Chartwell Holiday Classic and Chelsea Small was also named to the all-tournament team.

Indiana State takes a break for the holidays before resuming action with its Missouri Valley Conference opener at Wichita State on Jan. 2 at 8 p.m. ET. The game at Koch Arena will live on ESPN3.
