Box Score TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Senior forward Racheal Mahan poured in a career-high 25 points as Indiana State women's basketball held on for a 76-69 win over East Tennessee State on Monday evening at Hulman Center. ISU improves to 3-1 on the 2014 season.
Mahan went 11-for-16 from the field and added a team-high seven rebounds as Indiana State scored 48 of its 76 points in the paint on the night.
Senior guard Natasha Zurek also picked up a career-high six steals to go along with eight points while senior forward Jasmine Grier came off the bench for 12 points including two 3-pointers.
In addition, all 10 players who saw action for ISU scored at least two points and picked up a rebound each. The Indiana State bench was also productive, collecting 25 points from non-starters.
Indiana State rebounded from Saturday's loss to Stetson by going 44.6 percent from the floor on the night while also dishing out a combined 17 assists. Senior guard Travecia Franklin led with four assists while adding nine points.
The Sycamores nearly squandered a 13-point second half lead in the final minutes. Up by 10 with 2:55 to play, the Bucs chipped away at the Sycamore lead on a pair of buckets, including an and-1 from Chandler Christopher.
A steal by ETSU led to a Serena Clark layup and dwindled the ISU lead to just four with 30 seconds to play. Franklin helped seal the win for Indiana State with ball pressure to pick up the steal with 10 seconds to play.
With both teams in the bonus for much of the second half, Indiana State was able to convert on three free throws down the stretch including two from senior forward Chelsea Small.
The Sycamores came out hot in the first half, building a 6-0 lead after senior guard Stephanie Wittman found the rim. Defense was the star of the first half, as ISU built momentum forcing a shot clock violation with 11:21 to play in the half.
ETSU cut the ISU lead down to two with 4:15 left before the break, but a Marshall put back made it a four point game. Free throw by Mahan late in the period helped ISU build a 36-30 lead at halftime.
The Sycamores outrebounded the Bucs, 41-35, on the night and combined for 13 steals and committed a season-low 14 turnovers.
Senior guard Stephanie Wittman and redshirt sophomore Joyea Marshall each added five rebounds for ISU, while junior guard Alexis Newbolt added four and dished out three assists. Sophomore forward Rhagen Smith also came into grab six rebounds while senior forward Lashonda Littleton added four points.
Indiana State hits the road for a Thanksgiving eve matchup against South Alabama. Tipoff is set for 8:05 p.m. ET in Mobile.
