TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Sophomore outside hitter Bree Spangler recorded her 12TH double-double of the season but Indiana State fell in straight sets, 0-3 (20-25, 22-25, 22-25) to Wichita State on Friday evening at ISU Arena. Indiana State drops to 17-12, 9-8 in the MVC.
Spangler led the Sycamores with 12 kills and 13 digs on the night, tying with Cassandra Willis for a team-leading 13 points against the Shockers. ISU mustered just a .177 hitting percentage on the night with Spangler leading the way and junior middle blocker Cassandra Willis chipped in 11 on a .417 hitting percentage.
Freshman libero Danielle Waedekin ledISU in the backrow with 14 digs while junior setter Erika contributed nine digs and 32 assists along with two service aces.
Senior middle blocker Kyla Thomas also added seven kills to go along with a block as she begins her final home weekend in a Sycamore uniform.
ISU couldn't overcome hot hitting by the Shockers, who compiled a .302 hitting percentage on the night for their 10th match of the season hitting above a .300 clip. MaryAshton Floyd posted 21 kills and 13 digs for a match-high 22.5 points, while Ashlyn Driskill added 14.5 kills against the Sycamores.
Indiana State fell behind in set one after a 7-0 run by the Shockers made it 6-13. They would cut the lead down to three on a WSU attack error, but couldn't come any closer.
Wichita State closed the set by scoring the next three points and capitalizing on a Sycamore attack error to win 25-20.
Indiana State kept up with the Shockers in set two, taking its first lead of the night on a kill by Spangler. However, WSU went on a 4-0 run to regain the lead they would never relinquish.
ISU came within two on a kill by Willis but ISU got three straight points before three straight kills from Spangler made it a 21-23 game.
But the Sycamores couldn't recover, posting two kills in the finalthree plays for the 22-25 victory.
Coming out on fire in the third set, ISU took a 11-5 lead. But another run by the Shockers cut the home team's lead to 11-9 after MVC Freshman of the Week Abbie Lehman laid down a kill.
Playing a tight set, exchanged five score ties and one lead change in the final seven points as ISU tied it up 20-20 on a Thomas kill. A slam by junior outside hitter Victoria Swigart made it 22-21 but Wichita State closed the set on a 4-0 run for the 25-22 set victory.
Indiana State finishes regular season play tomorrow in ISU Arena against Missouri State at 7 p.m. The Sycamores will honor senior middle blocker Kyla Thomas for her four-year playing career before the start of the match.
