Soccer Gameday Central: Sycamores Host Green Bay Friday Night For "Bark In The Park"

SETTING THE STAGE
The Indiana State women's soccer team continues the 2013 campaign when they return to the friendly confines of Memorial Stadium on Friday, September 6 to take on Green Bay. Kick-off is set for 7:00 p.m. (ET). The game will be broadcast via webcast on GoSycamores.com for free. The campaign continues on Sunday, September 8 when they travel to SIU Edwardsville. Kick-off from Edwardsville, Ill., is set for 2:00 p.m. (ET). Live statistics for the match will be available for free on GoSycamores.com.

 

The Sycamores are 1-2-0 on the season while Green Bay enters Friday's match with a record of 2-1-1. SIU Edwardsville is 2-1-0 on the young season.

 

Indiana State opened the 2013 season with a thrilling 2-1 overtime victory over Georgia Southern on August 23 and have since dropped two in a row. The Sycamores fell 3-0 to Butler and gave up a late goal to fall 2-1 at Western Kentucky on September 1.

 

Kate Johnson has scored two of the Sycamore's three goals this season and leads the team with four points. Freshman Kayla Welch owns the other Indiana State goal this season. Brittany San Roman has been in goal for every minute of the Sycamores' season, including notching a career-best 10 saves against Butler.


The Sycamores return a pair of All-MVC award winners in 2013 as senior midfielder Shelby Troyer and sophomore midfielder Sydney Lovelace were honored by the league coaches. Lovelace was selected to the All-MVC Second Team, with Lovelace also earning MVC All-Freshman Team honors. Troyer rounded out the awards for the Sycamores, earning Honorable Mention All-MVC for the second straight season.

 

Friday Night Is “Bark In The Park”
Friday night's match against Green Bay is the annual “Bark In The Park” night at Memorial Stadium. Each year for one night only, Memorial Stadium allows dogs to come and watch the excitement of ISU soccer. Fans can come and watch the Sycamores take on Green Bay at 7:00 p.m. Admission is FREE with two donations for the local animal shelters (food, cleaning supplies, toys, beds, etc.). There will be raffles and prizes given away throughout the entire match. Dogs from area shelters will be there for those looking to adopt a new pet. Don't miss the doggy adoption half time show!

 

A Little History -- Green Bay
Indiana State is 1-0 all-time against the Green Bay Phoenix, earning a 3-0 victory on the road in 2012.

 

Scouting The Phoenix
Green Bay is 2-1-1 on the season as they earned a 1-1 tie in the season opener at IUPUI on August 23. After falling at Ball State 3-0 on August 25, Green Bay downed Western Illinois 3-1 on August 30 and then took down Eastern Illinois by the score of 2-0 on September 1. Both the WIU and EIU matches were held at home. Green Bay is led by Hekla Palmadottir who has two goals in 2013 and leads the team with six points. Heidi Hartmann owns a team-high 17 shots. In goal for Green Bay has been Katy Pilarzyk who is 1-0-0 on the season with six saves while Nastacia Behle owns 10 saves and is 1-1-1 so far in 2013.

 

A Little History -- SIU-Edwardsville
Indiana State owns a 3-2 record against SIU Edwardsville and Sunday's match will be the sixth all-time meeting between the two programs. Last season, the Sycamores were 2-0 victors over SIUE in the lidlifter for both teams at Memorial Stadium.

 

Scouting The Cougars
SIU Edwardsville owns a 2-1-0 record this season, falling in their season opener 1-0 at Kansas City on August 23. They have since rebounded to earn a 4-1 victory at MVC member Drake on August 25 and were last in action at home against IUPUI on August 30 which resulted in a 2-0 victory. Kayla Delgado leads the team with four goals and eight points. Michelle Auer paces the Cougars with nine shots. Jennifer Pelley has been in goal for SIUE for all 270 minutes of action, allowing just two goals and recorded 10 saves.

 

Kate Johnson Nets Her Second Goal Of 2013 Against Western Kentucky
Indiana State sophomore Kate Johnson scored her second goal of the season when her shot hit the top cross bar and bounced down into the net during the 39th minute of a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Western Kentucky on Sunday, September 1. Johnson's goal was a first half equalizer which erased an early 1-0 deficit to the Lady Toppers. Johnson leads the Sycamores through three matches played with two goals
and four points.

 

Brittany San Roman Busy In Goal So Far For The Sycamores
Indiana State freshman Brittany San Roman has been busy in goal during the young season for the Indiana State Sycamores thus far. She has played every minute in goal for the Sycamores in 2013, amassing 286 minutes of action and 18 saves. While she has yet to record her first collegiate shutout, San Roman has saved 18-of-24 shots on goal from the opposition for a save percentage of .750.

 

Sycamores Strong In First Half This Season
The Sycamores have been strong so far this season in the first half of action as two of their three goals have been scored before the halftime break. Freshman Kayla Welch scored the first goal of the season against Georgia Southern and Kate Johnson posted a goal in the waning minutes of the first half at Western Kentucky. The only goal this season to come after halftime was Johnson's golden goal which was netted in the 106th minute during the season opener against Georgia Southern.

Kate Johnson scored her first goal of the 2013 season in the opener on August 23 as the Sycamores earned a 2-1 victory in double overtime over Georgia Southern. Johnson's goal came in the 106th minute of action as a golden goal which lifted Indiana State to victory. Her goal came off the assist from Bria Caldwell from 28 yards out as ISU earned his first-ever victory over the Eagles or a member of the Southern Conference. For the match, Johnson had two shots, both on goal as well as the golden goal for the win. Johnson added one shot in Sunday's match against Butler.

 

Free Kicks Give Sycamores “Welch” On The Scoreboard
Indiana State freshman defender Kayla Welch continued to impress early on in the season as she scored the equalizing goal in the 37th minute of the first half against Georgia Southern. The Sycamores eventually topped the Eagles by the score of 2-1 in double overtime for the season-opening victory. Welch's goal came from 20 yards on a free kick. The game-tying goal proved to be Welch's only shot on goal versus the Eagles. Welch added one shot against Butler in Sunday's match.

 

First Victory Over Southern Conference
With its 2-1 victory over Georgia Southern, the Sycamores earned their first-ever victory over the Eagles. It was also the program's first victory over a member of the Southern Conference, having previously dropped a pair of road matches in the program's inaugural season of 2000 to Chattanooga and Western Carolina.

 

Leading All Newcomers
Freshman Sydney Lovelace led all freshmen in the MVC last season with 59 shots, an average of 2.81 shots per game. Overall, the Franklin, Ohio, and Franklin High School product, ranked third in shots and fourth in shots per game across the league. She was the Indiana State representative on the All-MVC Preseason Team in 2013.

 

Sycamores Picked To Finish Fourth In The MVC
Indiana State was picked to finish fourth in the Missouri Valley Conference in 2013 after finishing as the league's No. 5 seed and advancing to the MVC Championship Match in 2012. The fourth place prediction is the highest for the Sycamores since a similar result in 2011.

 

Doubling Up
The Sycamores continued their recent trend of success when scoring multiple goals as they won for their seventh time in its last eight matches when reaching the net more than once, dating back to the 2012 season as the Sycamores posted a 2-1 victory over Georgia Southern on August 25. Since the program's debut in 2000, the Sycamores are now 67-11-4 when scoring at least two goals in a match.


Scoring First
Indiana State was 7-1 last season when scoring the first goal in a match, compared to a 1-9 mark when their opponent's net the game's opening goal. The Sycamores earned wins over SIU Edwardsville (2-0), Eastern Illinois (1-0), IUPUI (2-1), Green Bay (3-0), Creighton (3-1), Missouri State (1-0) and Evansville (2-1) last season when scoring first with their lone loss coming at Illinois State. ISU's single win last season when scoring second came against Murray State on Sept. 2, as the Sycamores scored twice in the second half to pick up a 2-1 victory.

  

Good Production
Taylor Reed and Shelby Troyer tied for the team-lead in scoring last season, each totaling nine points. The midfielders combined for seven goals and four assists last season, despite taking just 12 total shots on goal. Reed and Troyer both scored two game-winning goals in 2012, leading the Sycamores to wins over SIU Edwardsville, Murray State, Creighton and Missouri State.

 

The 91st Minute
With its 2-1 double overtime victory over Georgia Southern on August 23, Indiana State has now played 40 overtime matches in their program history, holding a 14-12-14 record when the match goes past 90 minutes. In the five years under head coach Erika True, the Sycamores have played 20 overtime matches, posting an 8-5-7 record in extra time. Indiana State was 1-0-3 in overtime last season and are off to a 1-0 record in extra time in 2013.

The Sycamores hold a 15-18-2 (.455) record at home since 2009, fifth-year head coach Erika True's first season at Indiana State. ISU's best home season under head coach True came in 2010, when the Sycamores totaled a 6-4-1 record at Memorial Stadium. Indiana State is an even 1-1-0 at home this season, earning a season-opening victory over Georgia Southern on August 23.

 

First Conference Road Win Since 2009
Indiana State's road victory at Missouri State on Thursday, Oct. 25, was the first road win in league play for the Sycamores since 2009, when ISU topped Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, 2-1. ISU had lost eight straight matches on the road in MVC action from 2009 to 2012, before junior Taylor Reed sent Indiana State to an overtime victory in Springfield. Indiana State is 9-31-0 all-time on the road in conference play since the program's first season in 2000.
