Sycamores Travel To Toledo & Eastern Michigan This Weekend

SETTING THE STAGE
The Indiana State women's soccer team continues the 2013 campaign as they travel to Toledo of The Mid-American Conference on Friday, September 20. Kick-off is set for 5:00 p.m. (ET). The match will have live stats available for free on GoSycamores.com. The campaign continues on Sunday, September 22 when the Sycamores continue their road swing at Eastern Michigan, also of the Mid-American Conference. Kickoff versus the Eagles is 1:00 p.m. (ET). The Sycamores are 3-4-0 on the season while Toledo is 2-4-0. Eastern Michigan enters the weekend with a record of 1-4-1. None of the teams have yet to play a conference match.

 

Indiana State opened the 2013 season with a thrilling 2-1 overtime victory over Georgia Southern on August 23 and earned their second victory of the campaign with 4-0 win over Green Bay on September 6. Taylor Reed tied a school record with two goals against the Phoenix. The Sycamores earned their third victory of the season against UT-Martin on September 15 by the score of 4-2. Taylor's sister Abby joined the Sycamore multi-goal club for 2013 with two goals against the Fighting Illini and Kate Johnson added two of her own in the team's most recent match on September 15 at home versus UT-Martin.

 

Kate Johnson and freshman Abby Reed lead the team with four goals each and 10 points scored and also are tied for the team lead with 15 shots each. Johnson, Reed and Sydney Lovelace pace the squad with six shots on goal to their credit while Brittany San Roman leads the team with 34 saves and Abby Keller, who made her first career start in the last match versus UT-Martin has eight saves.

 

A Little History -- Toledo
Indiana State holds a 1-0 lead in the all-time series against Toledo with that victory coming on September 15, 2006 at home by score of 1-0. ISU has never faced the Rockets on the road.

 

Scouting The Rockets
Toledo enters Friday night's match against Indiana State with a 2-4-0 record, including a mark of 1-1-0 at home. The Rockets dropped each of their first two matches of the season before picking up a 1-0 victory on August 30 at Youngstown State. After falling to Kentucky and Pittsburgh, Toledo downed No. 22 Pepperdine, 3-2, in their last match September 8. Rachel MacLeod leads Toledo with 10 points on five goals and 13 shots, including two game-winning goals. Sam Tiongson has played 450 minutes in goal for Toledo with 17 saves and a record of 2-3-0.

 

A Little History -- Eastern Michigan
Indiana State is 0-2 against Eastern Michigan, dropping a pair of contests during the 2008 & 2009 campaigns in a home-and-home series. ISU last faced the Eagles on August 30, 2009 on the road, falling 2-1.

 

Scouting The Eagles
Eastern Michigan is 1-4-1 on the season, including a 1-1-0 record at home heading into this weekend's play. The Eagles opened the season with a 3-2 home field victory over Detroit before losing three matches in a row to Ohio State, Michigan and Indiana. EMU tied Butler on September 8 by the score of 1-1 and most recently dropped a close 3-2 decision to Michigan State on September 15.

 

Abby Reed Ties School Record With Two Goals At Illinois
Indiana State freshman Abby Reed led the team with three goals scored as well as seven points as the Sycamores split a pair of contests this week, on the road versus Illinois (L, 2-3) and at home against UT-Martin (W, 4-2). Reed scored two of her goals against the Fighting Illini on the road, including an early goal which staked the Sycamores to a 1-0 lead as well as a late goal which inched the Sycamores within 3-2 of Illinois. Reed added another goal in the home contest versus UT-Martin as she staked Indiana State to a 2-0 lead in the first half over the SkyHawks as she beat the defense and as well as the keep for the score. Reed tied a school record held by many with her two goals scored at Illinois. For the week, Reed owned eight shots and three shots on goal. She added an assist against UT-Martin.

 

Three Different Sycamores Have Scored Multiple Goals In A Match This Season
Indiana State is currently led in goal scoring by sophomore Kate Johnson as well as true freshman Abby Reed who have each reached the net four times. Johnson scored two goals against UT-Martin to become the third Sycamore this season to post two goals in a match this season while Abby Reed joined her older sister Taylor Reed on the list with her two goals at Illinois. Both Reed and Johnson have recorded two assists as well as so each lead the team with 10 points on the season and each also have recorded 15 shots as well as six shots on goal.

 

Sycamores Finding Success When Scoring More Than One Goal
The Sycamores have continued their recent trend of success when scoring multiple goals as they won for their eighth time in its last nine matches when reaching the net more than once, dating back to the 2012 season as the Sycamores have won in such games against Georgia Southern and UT-Martin this year. Since the program's debut in 2000, the Sycamores are now 68-12-4 when scoring at least two goals in a match.

 


Sycamore Offense Proving To Be At Top Of The Missouri Valley Conference
Indiana State's offense has been one of the most potent in the Missouri Valley Conference so far this season as they have scored 13 goals in seven matches this season, which trails only Illinois State and their 15 goals. The Redbirds have played in one more match that have the Sycamores. The Sycamores are averaging 1.86 goals per game this season which is also second-best in the league and they are one of just three league schools to average scoring more than one goal per match.

 

Taylor Reed Ties School Record With Two Goals Against Green Bay
Indiana State senior Taylor Reed tied a school record with two goals scored against Green Bay in the first of two matches over the September 6-8 weekend for Sycamore soccer. Indiana State earned a 4-0 victory over the Phoenix before falling to red-hot SIU Edwardsville 1-0. For the week, Reed owned five shots, including four shots on goal. She led the team with two goals and four points. Both of Reed's two goals came in the first half against Green Bay and she now owns a pair of goals on the season.

 

Sycamores Earn Big Victory Over Green Bay
Indiana State's 4-0 victory over Green Bay marked the first time that the Sycamores have scored four goals in a match during the Erika True era, which began in 2009, and was also the Sycamores' largest margin of victory under True. It also marked the most goals for an Indiana State team in one match since a 9-0 victory over Oakland City on Oct. 12, 2008. Additionally, Taylor Reed's two goals tied a school single-match record.

 

Noteworthy Shutout Of Green Bay
The Sycamores were able to shutout Green Bay by the score of 4-0 on September 7, give the Sycamores their first shutout of the season as well as their first in the last six matches dating back to a 0-0 draw in the quarterfinals of the MVC Tournament on October 28, 2012 at Northern Iowa. As the match was a part of postseason play, the Sycamores won and advanced based on a 4-3 victory in a penalty kick shootout. All told, the Sycamores recorded six shutouts in 2012.

 

Kate Johnson Scores Game Winner Against Georgia Southern
Kate Johnson scored her first goal of the 2013 season in the opener on August 23 as the Sycamores earned a 2-1 victory in double overtime over Georgia Southern. Johnson's goal came in the 106th minute of action as a golden goal which lifted Indiana State to victory. Her goal came off the assist from Bria Caldwell from 28 yards out as ISU earned his first-ever victory over the Eagles or a member of the Southern Conference. For the match, Johnson had two shots, both on goal as well as the golden goal for the win. Johnson added one shot in Sunday's match against Butler.

 

Kate Johnson Nets Her Second Goal Of 2013 Against Western Kentucky
Indiana State sophomore Kate Johnson scored her second goal of the season when her shot hit the top cross bar and bounced down into the net during the 39th minute of a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Western Kentucky on Sunday, September 1. Johnson's goal was a first half equalizer which erased an early 1-0 deficit to the Lady Toppers. Johnson leads the Sycamores through three matches played with two goals
and four points.

 

Sycamores Picked To Finish Fourth In The MVC
Indiana State was picked to finish fourth in the Missouri Valley Conference in 2013 after finishing as the league's No. 5 seed and advancing to the MVC Championship Match in 2012. The fourth place prediction is the highest for the Sycamores since a similar result in 2011.

 

Scoring First
Indiana State was 7-1 last season when scoring the first goal in a match, compared to a 1-9 mark when their opponent's net the game's opening goal. The Sycamores earned wins over SIU Edwardsville (2-0), Eastern Illinois (1-0), IUPUI (2-1), Green Bay (3-0), Creighton (3-1), Missouri State (1-0) and Evansville (2-1) last season when scoring first with their lone loss coming at Illinois State. The Sycamores have scored first in each of their three victories so far in 2013.

 

 

The 91st Minute
With its 2-1 double overtime victory over Georgia Southern on August 23, Indiana State has now played 40 overtime matches in their program history, holding a 14-12-14 record when the match goes past 90 minutes. In the five years under head coach Erika True, the Sycamores have played 20 overtime matches, posting an 8-5-7 record in extra time. Indiana State was 1-0-3 in overtime last season and are off to a 1-0 record in extra time in 2013.

The Sycamores hold a 17-18-2 (.486) record at home since 2009, fifth-year head coach Erika True's first season at Indiana State. ISU's best home season under head coach True came in 2010, when the Sycamores totaled a 6-4-1 record at Memorial Stadium. Indiana State is 3-1-0 at home this season, earning a season-opening victory over Georgia Southern on August 23 and coming back with 4-0 shutout victory over Green Bay on September 6 before tacking on a 4-2 victory over UT-Martin on September 15.

 

First Conference Road Win Since 2009
Indiana State's road victory at Missouri State on Thursday, Oct. 25, was the first road win in league play for the Sycamores since 2009, when ISU topped Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, 2-1. ISU had lost eight straight matches on the road in MVC action from 2009 to 2012, before junior Taylor Reed sent Indiana State to an overtime victory in Springfield. Indiana State is 9-31-0 all-time on the road in conference play since the program's first season in 2000.
