CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- Indiana State freshman Abby Reed tied a school record with two goals scored on the road at Illinois but the Sycamores narrowly fell to the Fighting Illini by the score of 3-2 on Friday (Sept. 13) at the Illinois Soccer Complex.
The Sycamores fell to 2-4-0 while Illinois improved to 4-2-1.
Abby Reed, a freshman from Rockford, Ill., matched the school record effort by her older sister Taylor Reed, by scoring two goals in the match. The elder Reed reached the net twice last week at home against Green Bay.
Reed's first goal came in the match's 22nd minute to give the Sycamores a 1-0 advantage. Reed took a pass in the box from Emily Chura through the Fightlng Illini defense and she beat the goal keeper for the score.
Illinois would go on to score three unanswered goals until Reed struck the net for the second time in the match during the 85th minute when she took a cross from Sydney Lovelace. Reed then fired the ball through the defense and found the empty net to get the Sycamores within 3-2 late.
Abby Reed led the Sycamores with four shots in the match in playing all 90 minutes. Illinois owned a 25-11 lead in shots, including a 10-5 advantage in shots on goal. Freshman Brittany San Roman played all 90 minutes in goal for the Sycamores and recorded seven saves.
The Sycamores return to action on Sunday, September 15 as they host UT-Martin inside the friendly confines of Memorial Stadium. Kick-off is set for 1:00 p.m. (ET).
