TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- The Indiana State soccer team opened the 2013 campaign with a 3-1 victory over visiting Northern Kentucky in a friendly between the two programs on Monday evening. Freshman Abby Reed scored two goals in the contest to lead the Sycamores to victory on an overcast but humid evening in front of 267 fans inside Memorial Stadium.

The Sycamores struck first in the match, which consisted of three 30 minute periods, on a goal scored near the box by Reed just under nine minutes in. Abby Reed is a freshman from Rockford, Ill., and is the younger sister of senior Taylor Reed, who was the Sycamores' leading scorer last season.

ISU added to its lead in the second period with a pair of goals just over two minutes apart as senior Shelby Troyer scored an unassisted goal for the 2-0 advantage and then the younger Reed found the net for the second time in the match off the assist from Maggie Richard for the 3-0 lead.

The Sycamores maintained their advantage until a late goal came from the Northern Kentucky side by Casey McMillan off an assist by Aubrey Muench in the third period.

The Sycamores withstood a charge by the Norse in the waning seconds of the match to earn the 3-1 victory.

ISU owned a 24-14 edge in shots over Northern Kentucky, including an 8-5 advantage in the first period and an 11-4 mark in the third. Each team had five shots in the second period. In goal for the Sycamores was freshman keeper Brittany San Roman, who allowed one goal but also recorded a total of three saves.

Abby Reed and Sydney Loesing each had six shots in the match to lead the Sycamore attack. Sydney Lovelace added three shots as did Kylie Sumner.

Before the friendly, Sycamore coaches and student-athletes continued their strong track record of service to the Wabash Valley by hosting a Free Youth Clinic to nearly 50 young soccer players in the practice area just to the North of the Memorial Stadium pitch.

Indiana State returns to action with their second and final friendly of the preseason on Saturday, August 17 when they host Bowling Green inside Memorial Stadium. Kick-off is set for 1:00 p.m. (ET).
