SECAUCUS, N.J. – Junior Sean Manaea was selected with the 34th overall pick by the Kansas City Royals in the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft on Thursday, June 6, becoming the second-highest draft choice in Indiana State baseball history.
Manaea's selection at No. 34 overall in Competitive Balance Round A (between rounds one and two) trails only Bill Hayes (No. 13, Chicago Cubs, 1978) on the list of the highest draft choices from Indiana State.
The Wanatah, Ind., native set an Indiana State single-season record with a 1.47 ERA in 2013, posting a 5-4 record over 13 starts. Manaea fanned a team-leading 93 batters in 73.1 innings pitched, ranking third in the NCAA with an 11.4 strikeouts per nine innings average. The Sycamore southpaw has led the team in strikeouts in all three of his seasons at Indiana State (2011-13), finishing his junior season with 290 career strikeouts, good for third in school history.
Manaea broke onto the national scene during the summer of 2012 when he played with the Hyannis Harbor Hawks of the Cape Cod Baseball League. He earned both the B.F.C. Whitehouse Top Pitcher and the Robert A. McNeese Outstanding Pro Prospect awards from the CCBL, totaling a 5-1 record and a 1.22 ERA with a league-leading 85 strikeouts in 57.1 innings pitched.
Under the terms of Major League Baseball's collective bargaining agreement, professional clubs must sign a drafted player by July 15, or the rights to that player are lost and they may re-enter the draft in 2014. The 2013 MLB Draft continues on Friday (rounds 3-10) and Saturday (rounds 11-40) with an audio stream available through MLB.com.
