DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Indiana State
women's golf team opened up play in the Southwest Minnesota State University
Spring Invitational Thursday, shooting a 331 in the opening round to be in fourth
place heading into the final day of competition. The tournament is being played
on the Legends Course at LPGA International in Daytona Beach, Fla.
“The
course won today,” Greg Towne, Indiana State women's golf coach, said. “We had
25 mph winds and chilly temperatures. I was disappointed that the kinds didn't
recognize the difficulty early on. They got a little down and that affects your
play.”
Amanda
Smith led the Sycamore charge in the opening round with a 79 to tie for fourth
heading into Friday's final 18 holes. Emily Dixon sits tied for 19th with an 83
while Reece Feducia is tied for 23rd with an 85, and McCall Christopher is 31st
with an 85. Also competing for Indiana State is Christina Beyerl who is tied
for 37th with an 88, and Gina Della Camera who is tied for 40th with an 89.
“There
are plenty of times that a bogey is a good score on a hole in conditions like
the girls had today,” Towne said. “I think we will bounce back tomorrow and
make a game of it.”
Lynn
(Fla.) leads the team competition with a 315 total in the first round while
Flagler (Fla.) second at 321, and Barry (Fla.) third at 322. A total of 10
teams care competing in the tournament.
Louise
Manalo of Lynn (Fla.) is the overall lead with a first round 76.
The
second round will begin at 8:30 a.m. (EDT) with tee offs of holes one and 10
until 10:20 a.m. (EDT).
