HUNTSVILLE,
Ala.
- The Indiana State baseball team dropped their opening game of the 2013 season
on Friday, falling 2-0 to the IPFW Mastodons at Joe Davis Stadium in
Huntsville, Ala.
Indiana State (0-1) loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the first
inning, following three consecutive walks by senior Robby Ort, junior Mike
Fitzgerald and senior Casey McCurdy, but redshirt freshman Jeff Zahn grounded
out to first base to end the opening inning.
Junior Sean Manaea (0-1) pitched into the fifth inning, allowing four hits and
one run with six strikeouts and three walks. The ISU southpaw was lifted in the
fifth after allowing a leadoff walk to IPFW's Tyler Shepherd, who would come
around to score on a fielding error with one out in the inning. The Mastodons
(1-0) added to their lead later in the inning on a fielder's choice by Kristian
Gayday.
The Sycamores had another chance to get on the board in the bottom of the
fifth, as redshirt sophomore Jacob Hayes and Ort tallied ISU's first hits of
the game with back-to-back one-out singles. Indiana State loaded the bases in the
inning, but Zahn was caught looking to end the frame.
IPFW's Danny Tursell (1-0) earned the win in relief, totaling four outs on the
mound with one strikeout. Kyle Sorensen earned a three-inning save for the
Mastodons. Juniors Josh Negele and Kurt Kudrecki each saw time on the mound in
relief for the Sycamores, combining to allow four hits in five innings.
Indiana State tallied just two hits for the game, but drew 10 walks and left a total
of 10 runners on base.
ISU's loss marks the third consecutive season that the Sycamores have dropped
the opening game of their season and the first time since 2006 that Indiana
State has been shut out in a season opener. The Sycamores were blanked 3-0 by
Notre Dame back on Feb. 23, 2006.
Due to the anticipation of inclement weather on Saturday, changes have been
made to the schedule of the Bulldog Classic. Indiana State will face
tournament-host Alabama A&M on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. (ET) before playing
Morehead State in the doubleheader starting at 12:00 p.m. (ET) on Sunday.
