ISU Women?s Basketball Falls on the Road to ETSU

Box Score

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – Rebounding and a poor shooting percentage once again hurt the Indiana State Women's Basketball team as it fell to East Tennessee State on Wednesday evening, 75-67. The Sycamores (3-5) were outrebounded, 44-32, and shot just 32.8 percent from the floor on the evening.

With 11 lead changes throughout the contest, the Buccaneers led by as many as 12 with 12:10 to play in the second half, as the Sycamores couldn't find a rhythm on either side of the ball.

Indiana State did cut the lead to three on a 3-pointer by junior guard Stephanie Wittman with 4:59 to play, but ETSU (3-6) scored the next four points. The Bucs would take an eight point lead with 1:33 left on the clock and seven made free throws in the final 1:02 iced the win for ETSU.

ETSU would shoot 49.1 percent from the floor on the evening and 83.3 percent from the free throw line. The entire starting lineup for the Bucs scored in double figures including 18 from forward Maria Bond.

“When you allow a team to shoot almost 50 percent and give up as many rebounds as we did, you're not going to win many ball games,” Head coach Teri Moren said. “Rebounds are something we focused on all week but we'll keep working and try to turn this around before Saturday (against Butler).”

As a team, Indiana State forced 23 ETSU turnovers while they recorded a season low 12 on the night but it wasn't enough to help as it dropped its third-straight game.

The Sycamores trailed by just five at the break and led by as many as four less than four minutes into the contest on an Anna Munn three pointer. Munn led the Sycamores with 21 points in the loss on a 5-for-9 effort from behind the arc.

Junior forward Racheal Mahan also scored in double figures with 11 points and five rebounds including 7-for-8 performance from the free throw line. The Sycamore went 16-for-21 from behind the charity stripe (76.2 percent) for its best effort of the 2013-14 season.

Sophomore forward Marina Laramie led with a team-high seven rebounds while also scoring seven points and led the team with two steals.

Wittman posted eight points in her first game in a Sycamore uniform. Junior forward Chelsea Small also chipped in three points in her first appearance.

Senior guard Bilqis Abdul-Qaadir dished out six assists and scored nine points. On the night, ISU had 15 assists and went under their season average with six steals. Junior forward Chelsea Small also recorded her first points in a Sycamore uniform while junior guard Natasha Zurek and sophomore Kasey Johnson also scored on the night.

ISU looks to break its three-game skid as it returns to the Hulman Center on Saturday to face Butler as part of a basketball double-header with the Indiana State men's basketball team. Tipoff is set for 1:05 p.m. ET and will be seen live on WAWV-TV in Terre Haute.
