BLOOMINGTON, Ind.   The Indiana State women's golf team is currently in fourth place with sophomore Amanda Smith currently eighth in the individual standings after the opening round Saturday of the IU Fall Kickoff being playing on the Indiana University Golf Course in Bloomington, Ind.

“We had a pretty good day on the course and were able to use many of the things that we have been working on during the opening round,” Greg Towne, Indiana State women's golf coach, said. “I did something I haven't done before, just watched the girls compete during the round. We then hit the practice range and talked about what I saw. We had a good practice and I think we are going to have a good round on Sunday.”

The Hoosiers broke their team into two and Indiana was able to hold onto the top two spots after the opening round with one team shooting a 298 and the other a 304. IUPUI is currently in third with a 306 total with Indiana State not out of the running with a 315 total.

Southern Indiana's “A” team is in fifth at 321 with DePauw University sixth at 324, IPFW seventh with a 339 total, Valparaiso eighth at 340, Franklin College ninth at 350, and Southern Indiana's “B” tam 10th with a 381 total. Christian Brothers University is also in the competition but did not have enough to compete in the team standings.

Smith fired a 76 in her first round of the 2012-2013 season and is currently in eighth just six shots out of the lead. Senior Emily Dixon is in 15th after an opening round 79 while senior Christina Beyerl and sophomore Gina Della Camera are tied for 18th after each shot an 80.

“Amanda was calm and played smart in her first round of the year,” Towne said. “This was Emily's first round of golf since the MVC Championship due to attending summer school. Christina's swing looks really good and Gina came through with a nice round.”

Junior McCall Christopher is currently in 24th with an 81 while sophomore Andrea Frankiewicz shot an 82 and is currently in 28th. Sophomore Erinn Sutton had an 89 which puts her 53rd in the field of 71 golfers while sophomore Margaret Harper carded a 93 and is in 61st.

Indiana's Elizabeth Tong shot an even par 72 to lead by the field by a shot of IUPUI's Jordan Woods who carded a 73 in the opening round.

The final round of the tournament will be played on Sunday with a shot gun start at 8:30 a.m. (ET).
