CHARLES, Mo. - The third-seeded Wichita State Shockers
began the game on an 11-0 run and never looked back on Friday night at the 2012
State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Tournament, topping the sixth-seeded
Sycamores, 70-49, from inside the Family Arena.
Indiana State ends their 2011-12 season at 15-16 overall, tying for fifth place
in the MVC standings at an even 9-9.
Wichita State started the game by hitting five of its first six shots from the
field to spark the early 11-0 lead, as Indiana State went without a field goal
until a three-pointer from senior Brittany Schoen with 15:21 remaining in the
half made the score 13-5 Shockers.
The Shockers took a 37-16 lead into the break, as Indiana State hit just four
shots from the field in the opening half. ISU shot 4-for-20 overall and
1-for-10 from the three-point range, scoring seven of their 16 points from the
free-throw line.
Junior Taylor Whitley led the team with four first-half points. ISU turned the
ball over 13 times in the opening half, leading to a 16-2 advantage in points
off turnovers for the Shockers. Senior Haleigh Lankster led WSU with 14
first-half points.
The Sycamores continued to fight in the second half, using an 11-0 run over two
minutes to get as close as 45-29 with 14:05 remaining, but the Shockers
responded with a 9-2 run of their own regain their 20-point lead.
Indiana State would not get closer than 20 points for the remainder of the
game, falling by the final score of 70-49.
Schoen led the Sycamores with 12 points on Friday while also pulling down three
rebounds and dishing out three assists. Senior Deja Mattox scored seven of her nine points
in the second half, while senior Shannon Thomas went for six points and five
rebounds.
For the game, ISU shot 31.3% (15-for-48) from the field, including 3-for-18
from three-point range. WSU shot 60.9% (28-for-46) for the game.
