- Senior Brittany Schoen became the all-time leader in career three-pointers
made on Sunday, knocking down her 264th inside D.J. Sokol Arena in
Omaha, Neb. The Sycamores could not make Schoen's record come in victory, however,
as the Creighton Bluejays won 63-48 on Senior Day.
The loss drops Indiana State to 12-14 on the season, 6-8 in Missouri Valley
Conference play. Creighton improves to 15-11 overall, 9-6 within the league.
Indiana State and Creighton played an even opening 13 minutes in the first
half, as the score sat tied at 15-15 with 7:41 remaining in the opening stanza.
The Bluejays press defense took over for the next three and half minutes, as
the Bluejays used an 11-2 run to take a 26-17 lead 4:04 on the clock.
After Creighton took their largest lead of the half, at 29-19 with 2:29
remaining, the Sycamores closed the half on a 6-0 run to get within 29-25.
Senior Deja Mattox led ISU with seven points and eight rebounds at the break.
11 first-half turnovers led to nine more shot attempts for the Bluejays in the
opening half.
ISU's offense struggled to get going in the second half, scoring just eight
points over 13 minutes of action. The Sycamores never got closer than their
four-point halftime deficit in the second half.
Schoen knocked down her record-setting trey with 2:07 remaining the game,
hitting a shot from the left wing after a cross-court pass by junior Taylor Whitley. Schoen passes Kelsey Luna (263 - 2006-10) in the ISU record books and
currently sits in fifth place in MVC history.
Sophomore Anna Munn led the team with 10 points, tallying five in each half.
Mattox came up just one point short of her second career double-double,
finishing with nine points and 10 rebounds. Whitley turned in an all-around
effort, posting eight points, six rebounds and six assists. ISU took care of
the ball in second half, committing just one turnover, but could not get their
shots to fall as the team went 8-for-30 (26%) from the field in second half.
Sophomore Carli Tritz led Creighton with 18 points, eight rebounds and seven
assists, while fellow sophomore Sarah Nelson posted a 15-point, 12-rebound
double-double.
Indiana State returns to Hulman Center for their final homestand next weekend,
hosting Missouri State on Friday, Feb. 24, and Wichita State on Sunday, Feb.
