- The Indiana State women's soccer team advanced to the championship match of
the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament, defeating the Evansville Purple Aces
by a score of 2-1 from Morrison Stadium in Omaha, Neb.
Fifth-seeded Indiana State will face No. 2 Illinois State on Sunday for the tournament championship. The match will
kick off at 4:00 p.m. (ET) on Sunday, Nov. 4, and can be seen live on the MVC
TV Network.
Indiana State (8-9-3) dominated the run of play in the opening 45 minutes,
leading 13-2 in shots, 10-2 in shots on goal and 3-0 in corner kicks while posting
a 2-0 lead on the scoreboard into the halftime break.
The Sycamores scored the game's opening goal in the 25th minute, as sophomore
Bria Caldwell scored her first career goal at Indiana State. Sophomore Emily Chura fed Caldwell on the left side of the penalty box, where Caldwell did the
rest of the work. The sophomore forward from Richland, Wash., worked her way
around an Evansville defender to move towards the center of the box before
sending her shot just inside the back post for an opening goal.
Indiana State kept the pressure on Evansville after taking the lead, doubling
their advantage 13 minutes later in the 38th minute on a goal by freshman
Sydney Lovelace. Freshman Kylie Sumner found space with the ball on the left
wing, targeting Caldwell on the left side of the box. Caldwell worked around a
defender and slotted a pass across the top of the penalty box where Lovelace
arrived and curled a shot just inside the near post. The goal for Lovelace, a
Second Team All-MVC and All-Freshman Team selection, was her fourth of the
season.
Evansville (5-8-3), the tournament's top seed and the 2012 regular season
champion, came out on the front foot in the second half, creating numerous opportunities
at the Indiana State goal. The Purple Aces got back within one goal in the 73rd
minute on a goal by junior Stephanie Thompson.
The Purple Aces pushed numbers forward over the final 15 minutes of the match,
but the Sycamores were able to hang on to make their second trip to the MVC
Tournament Championship match.
Caldwell led the team with three points, scoring her first career goal to give
ISU the lead and assisting on the eventual game-winning goal. Lovelace led the
team with four shots, three of which were on goal. Freshman Erin Mitchell made
seven saves in goal for the Sycamores.
For the match, ISU led 16-11 in shots, 12-8 in shots on goal and 4-0 in corner
kicks. ISU also improves to 5-0 when leading at the half and 6-1 when scoring
multiple goals in a match this season.
Indiana State has only advanced to the championship match of the conference
tournament one other time in program history, coming back in 2008.
