ST. LOUIS—Senior Al Escalera was named Indiana State's second Missouri Valley Conference Cross Country Athlete of the Week for the 2012 season as announced by the league office Tuesday.

Escalera shattered the Indiana State school record Friday at the Notre Dame Invitational as he led the team with a 16th place individual finish. Escalera finished the 8k course in a time of 24:05, breaking the previous record of 24:17, set in 1999 by former Sycamore Jason Gunn. His time shaved 46  seconds off his previous best of 24:51 set in 2010.

This marks the second time the senior has won the award as he also earned the title on Sept. 7, 2010.

Teammate Dustin Betz won the team first MVC Athlete of the Week title on Sept. 11.

The Sycamores now have the weekend off before traveling to Louiville, Ky. on Saturday, Oct. 13 at the Pre-National Invitational.
