- The University of Evansville Purple Aces moved into a tie for first place in
the Missouri Valley Conference on Wednesday night, shutting out the visiting
Indiana State women's soccer team by a 3-0 score from Arad McCutchan Stadium
and Black Beauty Field.
Evansville (4-7-3, 3-1-1 MVC) took the lead in the 24th minute, coming off the
foot of Abby Springer. Springer collected a loose ball in midfield and worked
her way passed the Indiana State defense, shooting from the center of the
penalty box and through the diving hands of freshman Erin Mitchell.
The Purple Aces led Indiana State (6-9-1, 1-3 MVC) in shots at the break,
holding a 5-4 edge in total attempts and a 3-2 margin in shots on goal. The
Sycamores took two out of the game's three corner kicks in the opening 45
minutes.
UE doubled their lead 10 minutes into the second half, as Kayla Smith finished a
cross from Springer in front of the Indiana State goal. Evansville put the
finishing touches on the match in the 80th minute as their corner kick
deflected off an Indiana State defender and slipped under the crossbar for an
own goal.
Indiana State's best chance at getting on the board came in the 74th minute
from freshman Sydney Lovelace, but her attempt following a corner kick hit the
crossbar.
Lovelace led the Indiana State attack, taking five shots with two on goal. For
the match, Indiana State led 11-8 in shots, 6-5 in shots on goal and 6-3 in
corner kicks.
Indiana State plays their final home match of the season on Sunday afternoon,
hosting Drake at 1:00 p.m. on Senior Day. The Sycamores will be honoring four-year
letterwinners Kourtney Vassar and Casey Allbright before the match.
