HAUTE, Ind. - The Indiana State women's basketball team
held a 10-point lead with six minutes remaining against the Creighton Bluejays
on Friday night inside Hulman Center, but visitors ended the game on a 14-2 run
capped by a tiebreaking foul line jumper by sophomore Carli Tritz with three
seconds on the clock to send the Sycamores to their second straight loss,
64-62.
The loss drops ISU to 10-8 on the season and 4-2 within Missouri Valley Conference
play while CU improves to 9-8 overall, 3-3 within the league.
Creighton began the game on a 9-2 run, hitting their first four shots from the
field while Indiana State started 0-for-4. ISU battled back to take their first
lead of the game at 14-12 when freshman Natasha Zurek stole the ball from Tritz
and converted a fastbreak layup with 12:45 left in the half.
A free-throw by junior Taylor Whitley started a late first-half run for the
Sycamores, as ISU turned a two-point deficit into a nine-point halftime lead
with a 16-5 run over the final seven minutes of the first half.
Indiana State took a 36-27 lead into the locker room, thanks in large part to
their advantage at the charity stripe. In the first half, ISU went 14-of-17 at
the line while CU went 1-of-2. Senior Deja Mattox led the Sycamores with 13
first-half points.
ISU's advantage would grow as large as 12 points in the second half, sitting at
54-42 with 10:05 remaining and 57-45 with 7:25 to go. On both occasions, Indiana
State took their largest lead of the night on three-pointers from senior
Brittany Schoen.
ISU held a 10-point lead after Mattox converted an old-fashioned three-point
play with 6:07 on the clock, pushing ISU's lead to 60-50, but that was when ISU
began its late-game struggles.
Creighton tied the game by scoring on five straight possessions over a two and
half minutes span, using a 12-0 run to turn a 60-50 ISU lead into a 62-60 CU
edge. Tritz, last season's MVC Freshman of the Year, scored seven of Creighton's
12 points during the run.
Senior Shannon Thomas hit her only field goal of the game to tie the score at
62-62, hitting a left-handed layup with 2:08 remaining. The score remained
level and ISU had the ball for two possessions with under one minute to play,
but could not convert on a pair of shots by Schoen. The senior missed a deep
jumper with 43 seconds to go before Whitley snagged an offensive board. After
an ISU timeout, Schoen took a three-pointer with 26 seconds left that the
Bluejays were able to rebound.
The Bluejays came right down the court without a timeout as Tritz missed a
jumper near the paint. CU junior McKenzie Fujan grabbed the rebound, however,
and Creighton called timeout with 15 seconds to go. Tritz and sophomore Sarah
Nelson worked a high ball-screen for the game-winning play, as Tritz drove to
the free-throw line and sank a shot with three seconds on the clock.
Mattox posted a career-high 25 points on Friday, going 7-for-14 from the field
and 10-of-11 at the charity stripe. Schoen (11 points) and Whitley (10 points)
joined their teammate in double figures. Tritz scored 17 of her 19 points for
the game after halftime, including nine points in Creighton's 14-2 run to end
the game.
For the game, ISU outscored Creighton by 18 points at the line. Indiana State
went 20-for-27 at the free-throw line while Creighton ended the night 2-for-3.
The Bluejays took advantage of turnovers by the Sycamores, turning 21 ISU
miscues into 27 points.
Indiana State will look to rebound on Sunday, Jan. 22, when the Sycamores host
Drake at 2:05 p.m. Drake fell at Illinois State on Friday, 71-67, and enter the
game at 9-8 overall and 3-3 in MVC play.
