TERRE HAUTE, IND. - Five Sycamores established career highs as the Indiana State volleyball team staged several rallies to come back from a 2-1 deficit and defeat the visiting Bradley Braves 3-2 (29-27, 21-25, 22-25, 25-21, 15-13) in a Missouri Valley Conference battle Friday night in the ISU Arena.
Sophomore Monique Morris had career highs of 22 kills and 54 attempts while freshman Samantha Kersting had career highs of 10 kills and 26 attempts in leading the Sycamore offense. Kersting also had a career night at the net with two solo blocks and two assists.
Junior Morgan Dall returned to the court after missing the game at Chicago State on Tuesday and posted 21 kills while senior Stacy Qualizza added 10 kills. Sophomore Loni Mackinson had a career high 58 assists while senior Kiya James led the defense with 27 digs. Freshman Katie Moon also had a career high nine digs while sophomore Ashley Owen had a career high in blocks with two solo and one assist.
There were eight ties and one lead change in the opening set which set the tone for the entire match by going extra time. The Sycamores jumped out to a 7-3 lead and held the advantage for most of the set until the Braves rallied to tie the score at 23. The two teams traded points with the Sycamores keeping the advantage and holding a 28-27 lead after a Dall kill. Indiana State earned the 29-27 win on a Bradley attack error.
The second set was dominated by the Braves who rallied from an early 2-0 deficit and never looked back. Bradley led by 10 late in the set at 22-12 before the Sycamores staged a furious rally behind the serving of James and Mackinson. Indiana State was able to cut the Braves lead to 23-21 on a Kersting kill but couldn't get any closer as Bradley held on for the 25-21 win.
The Sycamores had control for most of the third set after jumping out to a 7-2 lead on a Qualizza kill. Indiana State could not hold onto the advantage as Bradley rallied to take the first lead of the set at 20-19. ISU was able to tie the set at 20 but could not regain the advantage with the Braves holding on to take a two sets to one lead with a 25-22 victory.
Indiana State showed renewed determination in the fourth set and never trailed after giving up the first point to Bradley. The Sycamores used a 4-0 run to gain the advantage but they were not able to put the Braves away. Bradley rallied to cut their deficit to two, 23-21, but Morris was able to seal the deal for ISU with a pair of kills that gave Indiana State a 25-21 win and send the contest into the deciding fifth set.
Victory was a mile away from Indiana State early in that final set as Bradley jumped out to a 7-3 lead and threatened to run away with the win. The Sycamores battled back, however, outscoring Bradley 12-6 the rest of the set. Dall closed out the Indiana State win with a kill that gave ISU a 15-13 victory in the set.
Indiana State improved to 9-5 overall and 1-2 in the Valley with the victory while the Braves fell to 7-5 overall and 1-2 in the conference. The Sycamores will host #14 Northern Iowa at 7 p.m. Saturday in the ISU Arena. Northern Iowa won at Illinois State Friday 3-1.
