TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - The Indiana State
women's soccer team played their best match as a team this season, but it was
not enough to come away with a result, as the physical Ball State Cardinals
scored the final two goals of the game to pick up the road win, 2-1 over the Sycamores
at Memorial Stadium on Friday night.
The loss is the third straight for ISU, dropping the team to 1-4 on the season.
Ball State evens their record to 2-2 overall.
For the third straight match, the game went into the locker room with either
side hitting the back of the net. Indiana State's best chance at scoring came on
a pair of shots off the foot of senior Alison Gasparovich in the opening 15
minutes of play.
Seniors Ashley Collins and Seyma Erenli set up Gasparovich up on the first play
in the eighth minute, connecting on passes that led the midfielder in on goal
with just the keeper to beat on the left side of the penalty box. The Ball
State goalie was up to the task, however, coming off her line and saving the
attempt. Gasparovich took another crack at goal in the 13
th minute
off a free kick, but her attempt sailed just a bit too high, skimming the
crossbar on its way over the goal.
Indiana State was the dominant team over the first 45 minutes, controlling much
of the pace and flow of the match. Their play showed in a 7-2 advantage in
shots, although both sides had two shots on goal and the Cardinals had the edge
in corner kicks, 2-1.
The Sycamores took the lead in the 59
th minute, on Gasparovich's
first goal of the 2011 season. Freshman Natalie Vaught began the attack on the left
wing, sending a pass down the wing that found Erenli, who sent the ball into
the box in front of goal. Gasparovich was there waiting, cutting in front of
the BSU goalkeeper and touching the ball into the back of the net.
Ball State tied up the match in the 69
th minute, when a pass to Shaniece
Thorpe got past sophomore goalkeeper Brianna Supulski at the top of the penalty
box. Thorpe moved past Supulski and finished the ball into the goal to knot up
the score.
The game remained tied through the end of regulation and into the second
overtime period when the Cardinals came away with the game-winner. BSU's Alyssa
Ables won a ball out of a scrum and found an open Pavla Benyrova in the middle
of park. Benyrova moved towards goal and took a shot from 40 yards out that
went into the top-left corner of the goal and over the outstretched hands of
senior Emily Lahay, who entered the match following the end of regulation.
For the match, Ball State edged Indiana State in shots (14-13), shots on goal
(7-6) and corners (4-2).
Individually, Gasparovich led ISU with six shots for the game, three on goal.
Erenli and junior Kourtney Vassar both took two shots. Supulski started and
played 90 minutes in goal, making four saves while allowing one goal. Lahay
entered for the overtime periods, making one save and allowing one goal in just
over 14 minutes between the posts.
The Sycamores will be tested on the road over the month of September, playing
six of the seven remaining matches in the month away from Terre Haute and
Memorial Stadium. ISU begins a five-game roadtrip on Sunday, with a 2:00 p.m.
(ET) matchup at SIU Edwardsville. Indiana State won in its last trip to
Edwardsville in 2009, topping the Cougars 2-1 in overtime on Sept. 17, on a
goal by junior Casey Allbright.
