NEW ORLEANS - The Indiana State men's cross country team remained 10th while the women dropped one spot to 14th as the second week of the Great Lakes Region rankings were released today by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
Indiana State competed in the Indiana Intercollegiates held at Indiana University this year last Friday with the men finishing third and the women fourth. Senior Jeremiah Vaughan was the top individual for the Sycamore men with a fourth place finish while senior Kacie Klem led the women with a fifth place finish.
"Considering we didn't have a great meet on Friday, our position in the rankings did not change," John McNichols, Indiana state men's cross country coach said. "There was some movement ahead of us and behind us but we stayed the same. We missed an opportunity to improve in the rankings but we will be bettered prepared for Notre Dame in two weeks."
The Indiana State men remained in 10th in this week's Great Lakes Region rankings, a spot they have held in the first three rankings released this year including the preseason rankings.
The top four teams remained the same with Wisconsin on top followed by Indiana, Ohio State, and Notre Dame. Michigan State and Michigan swapped spots with the Spartans now fifth and Wolverines sixth while Eastern Michigan made the biggest jump as they improved from 12th to seventh. Purdue, who won the Indiana Intercollegiates last Friday, moved up to eighth while Butler dropped two spots to ninth.
"I am glad we are still in the rankings of a really, really tough Great Lakes Region," John Gartland, Indiana State women's cross country coach said. "We had a good meet at the Intercollegiates but finished behind three teams that are in the Region."
The Sycamore women are ranked 14th in this week's rankings, down one from a week ago and despite the effort of senior Kacie Klem who led ISU to their best effort in years at the Intercollegiates.
"Klem was outstanding for us," Gartland said. "She led the team to a solid fourth place finish with her fifth place finish in the individual race."
The top seven were unchanged from a week ago led by the Michigan Wolverines and followed by Toledo, Michigan State, Indiana, Ohio State, Notre Dame and Wisconsin. Dayton was unranked a week ago but jumped into the eighth spot after a second place finish in the National Catholic Invitational at South Bend, Ind. Miami (Ohio) dropped one to ninth while Butler remained 10th.
Indiana State is off until Sept. 30 when they will race in the Notre Dame Invitational.
