DURHAM, N.H. - Indiana State junior Morgan Dall was named the Most Valuable Player in the Holly Young Invitational after the Sycamores rallied after losing the opening set to defeat the Fairfield Stags 3-1 (21-25, 25-18, 25-21, 25-23) in Lundholm Gymnasium on the campus of the University of New Hampshire and claim the 2011 championship.
"I am so proud of how the team played all weekend," Traci Dahl, Indiana State volleyball coach, said. "We learned how to fight and we didn't back down. We did some really good things that will carry over into conference."
Indiana State won the Akron Invitational last year with a 2-1 record but the 3-0 mark at the Holly Young Invitational is the first title with a perfect record since the 2004 team won the Central Michigan Invitational. Indiana State seniors Kiya James and Stacy Qualizza were also named to the All-Tournament team as the Sycamores improved to 7-3 on the season.
Dall had 24 kills to pace the Sycamore offense with sophomore Monique Morris adding 13 and senior Stacy Qualizza 11. Senior Shelbi Fouty contributed 23 assists with sophomore Loni Mackinson 22 while senior Kiya James had 27 digs. Qualizza also had seven blocks on the night.
After winning six straight sets in the tournament, the Sycamores suffered their first setback in the opening set against the Stags. Fairfield jumped out to an early 9-2 lead and never looked back. Indiana State did rally back to within two on several occasions but Fairfield stemmed the Sycamore effort and took a 25-21 opening set win.
The second set was a tight battle through most of the action with the Sycamores finally gaining the advantage for good on a block by Qualizza and Dall that put ISU up 16-15. Indiana State continued to capitalize on the momentum switch and evened the game at one set each after a pair of Morris kills gave ISU 25-18 win.
Fairfield surged to an early lead again in the third set but the Sycamores came right back and went up 4-3 on a Qualizza kill. Indiana State could not pull away from the Stags however and the set was tied at 13 before Dall knocked down a kill and then recorded a service ace for a 15-13 ISU lead. Indiana State maintained a two to three point lead the rest of the way and took the advantage in the game with a 25-21 set win.
For only the third time this season, the Sycamores played a fourth set in a game but this time they had the advantage in set wins. Although Fairfield dominated the action through the first half of the set, Indiana State used an 8-0 run midway through the action to rally from a 12-14 deficit and lead 20-14. The Sycamores would not let the Stags back into the action and posted the win on back-to-back kills by Morris and Dall for a 25-23 victory.
The Sycamores had 57 kills in 153 attempts with just 14 errors for a .281 attack percentage while the defense held the Stags to 54 kills in 160 attempts with 27 errors for a .169 hitting percentage.
Indiana State will continue their road swing next weekend when they open Missouri Valley Conference action at Wichita State on Friday and at Missouri State on Saturday. Both games begin at 8 p.m. (ET).
