TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - The Central Michigan women's soccer team posted a pair of goals in the second half, leading the Chippewas to a 2-0 victory over the Indiana State Sycamores at Memorial Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The loss drops Indiana State to 1-3 on the season, while Central Michigan remains unbeaten at 3-0.
The Chippewas were the dominant team for the opening minutes of play, taking four shots in the first six minutes of action. The Indiana State defense held strong, however, blocking two of the shots while senior Emily Lahay made one save in goal.
After those opening six minutes, the Sycamores and Chippewas battled through the midfield for long stretches of play. ISU's best chance at goal came in the 21st minute when senior Alison Gasparovich sent a cross into the box that found the foot of freshman Alexandra Rodas, but the freshman's attempt from the right side of the penalty box went just past the far post.
The match went into the halftime break in a scoreless tie, with CMU leading in shots (7-2), shots on goal (1-0) and corner kicks (1-0).
Central Michigan struck twice in the second half, scoring once in the 53rd minute and against in the 71st. Ashley Mejilla gave CMU the lead, taking advantage of an ISU turnover to hit the back of the net from 20 yards out in the middle of the field. The Chippewas doubled their lead when Claire Horton looped a pass over the ISU defense that fell to a sprinting Laura Gosse down the right wing. Gosse finished to the back post from the right side of the penalty box.
For the match, CMU led 15-8 in shots, 5-0 in shots on goal and 2-1 in corner kicks. Senior Seyma Erenli and sophomore Shelby Troyer led ISU, taking two shots each on the afternoon. Senior Emily Lahay made her second start of the season in goal, making three saves.
The Sycamores close out their four-game homestand on Friday, Sept. 2, when they host in-state rival Ball State at 7:00 p.m. at Memorial Stadium.
