TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - The Sycamore volleyball team jumped out to a two-sets to none lead but could not hold as the Miami RedHawk rallied for a 3-2 (12-25, 15-25, 25-15, 25-18, 15-11) victory in the second game Saturday of the Quality Inn/ACISC Classic.
The Sycamores fall to 2-1 on the season and will round out tournament competition by taking on Coppin State at 7 p.m. in the ISU Arena.
Junior Morgan Dall led the ISU offense with 20 kills while sophomore Monique Morris added 16 kills and 15 digs, and senior Stacy Qualizza 10. Senior setter Shelby Fouty had 44 assists and 15 digs while senior Kiya James had 16 digs. Sophomore Loni Mackinson had 11 digs in the contest.
Indiana State used a big 9-0 run in the opening set to break away from a 6-4 advantage and take control 15-4. The Sycamores were able to maintain control from there and posted their seventh straight set victory 25-12. That streak reach eighth straight set wins as ISU scored the first five points of the second set and maintained control for the 25-15 victory.
Miami (Ohio) asserted itself early in the third set as they broke a 4-all tie with a 5-0 run. Another 5-0 run later in the second gave the RedHawk a 16-8 lead and ISU could not recover, dropping their first set of the season 15-25. The Sycamores struggled to gain momentum in the fourth set and never could get the lead. Miami was able to hold off Indiana State and even up the game at two-sets each with a 25-18 win.
The RedHawk was able to gain control of the fifth set with an early 5-0 run that put ISU down 8-3. The Sycamores did rally and cut the deficit to 9-8 off a Morris kill but Indiana State could not get back even with Miami holding on to win 15-11 and take the game 3 sets to two.
