TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - The visiting Butler Bulldogs put together a consistent attack on Friday night at Memorial Stadium and came away with a road result, topping the Indiana State women's soccer team by a 1-0 score in front of 389 fans.
The loss drops the Sycamores to 1-2 on the season while the Bulldogs improve to 2-1.
The teams played a scoreless opening 45 minutes, although Butler controlled much of the flow of the half. Their command showed with a 7-1 advantage in shots, 2-0 advantage in shots on goal and a 2-1 edge in corner kicks at the break.
Butler nearly broke the game open in the opening 10 minutes of the second half, on a shot by Katie Griswold in the 48th minute that hit the crossbar and a shot from the right side of the penalty box by Jackie Hafele in the 52nd minute that rolled past the far post.
The Bulldogs broke through in the 68th minute, scoring on a header in the center of the box by Elise Kotsakis. Kotsakis was set up on the play by Rachael Melendez and Lucy Chauvin as Butler broke down the right side of the Sycamore defense.
Indiana State recorded just one shot on goal on Friday, coming off the foot of senior Alison Gasparovich in the 73rd minute. The Sycamores pushed forward looking for a game-tying goal over the final 15 minutes of the match, but the Bulldog defense held strong and turned away numerous crosses into the box by the ISU attack.
For the game, Butler led 13-7 in shots, 4-1 in shots on goal and 4-2 in corner kicks. Senior Seyma Erenli topped the ISU roster with two shots during the match. Sophomore Brianna Supulski made her second start of the season in goal for Indiana State, picking up the loss despite making three saves.
Indiana State returns to the field on Sunday, when the Sycamore host Central Michigan at 1:00 p.m.
