CHICAGO - Seniors
Deja Mattox and Brittany Schoen and sophomore Anna Munn combined for 13
3-pointers on Friday night inside the UIC Pavilion, as the Indiana State women's
basketball team picked up the road victory over the University of Illinois at
Chicago, 75-59.
The win is the second straight overall and first on the road for the Sycamores,
who now sit at 4-3 on the season. The Flames fell for the first time on their
home court, also moving to 4-3.
ISU and UIC battled to a 7-7 tie after four minutes of action before Indiana
State took a lead that they would not give back for the remainder of the game.
Over the game's next eight minutes, the Sycamores went on an 18-6 run, hitting
four 3-pointers during that stretch to push their lead to 25-13 with 8:41 left
until the half.
The Sycamores took a 37-30 lead into the halftime locker room, on the strength
of a 9-for-13 effort from long range. Mattox (4-for-6 3PT, 14 points), Munn
(3-for-5 3PT, 11 points) and Schoen (2-for-2 3PT, six points) led the way for
ISU at the break.
Indiana State put UIC away early in the second half, going on a 20-3 from the
17:21 mark until 8:21 remained in the game. The Flames had cut ISU's lead to
six points, at 43-37 on a trey by Taylor Foulks, before Schoen and Munn hit
3-pointers and senior Shannon Thomas converted a bucket in the paint to push
ISU's lead back to 14, at 51-37 with 14:11 to play. After another triple by
Foulks, Munn hit a three, Mattox made a fastbreak layup, Thomas added two more
in the paint and Schoen knocked down another trey to put ISU up by the largest
margin of the evening, at 63-40 with 8:21 to play.
After a quiet first half, the Sycamores fed the ball often to Thomas in the
paint in the second half, as the senior led the team with 10 points and five
rebounds in the second half.
For the game, ISU went 13-for-19 from beyond the arc, falling just two treys
short of the single-game school record. The Sycamores put four into
double-figures, led by Mattox (20 points, 4-for-7 3PT, three rebounds). Munn
(19 points, 4-for-9 3PT, two assists), Thomas (14 points, nine rebounds) and
Schoen (12 points, 4-4 3PT) also went into double-digits. Freshmen Natasha Zurek and Jessica Valley distributed the ball all game to their teammates,
combining for 12 assists between the pair of freshmen guards.
With her third 3-pointer of the game, Schoen moved into third place in ISU
history for career triples. Schoen passed Lisa Verhoff (214 - 2002-06) in the
Indiana State record book and now sits at 216 for her career.
Indiana State returns to Terre Haute for their final nonconference home game on
Tuesday, Dec. 6, when the Sycamores welcome in-state rival Butler. Tipoff is
set for 7:05 p.m. from inside Hulman Center.
