Wisconsin, Georgetown Wins Team Titles At 2011 NCAA Championships

TERRE HAUTE, IND. - Villanova senior Sheila Reid outkicked Oregon junior Jordan Hasay in the final 100 meters to successfully defend her individual championship at the 2011 NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Cross Country Championship held Monday on the Lavern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course at the Wabash Valley Family Sports Center.

Arizona freshman Lawi Lalong pulled away in the final kilometer to win his first NCAA individual title over Stanford senior Chris Derrick and Iona senior Leonard Korir.

Although the women's race was second on the docket, it did provide the most dramatic finish of the day. As the race entered the final two kilometers, a pack of 10 runners broke away from the rest of the field and battled for the front spot. That pack was whittled down by two at the five kilometer mark.

Reid, Hassay, Dartmouth sophomore Abbey D'Agostino, and Georgetown senior Emily Infield began to pull away in the final kilometer but it was Reid and Hasay who were shoulder-to-shoulder making the final turn into the stretch run. Reid was able to hold off Hasay in the final meters and took her second straight NCAA title with a time of 19:41.2. Hasay was second in 19:418 with D'Agostino coming in third with a time of 19:42.9 and Infield fourth in 19:44.3.

Georgetown claimed their first ever NCAA Championship in women's cross country with 162 points which was just eight points better than Washington who finished second with 170. Two-time defending champion Villanova was third with 181 points while Florida State was fourth with 189.

In the men's race, Lalang was among the leaders at each interval and made his move just before the front stretch to pull away from the field and win the 10K race in 28:44.1, just missing the course record of 28:41.3 set by Samuel Chelanga of Liberty in 2009. Derrick was second in 28:57.5 with Korir third in 29:02.5. Southern Utah senior Cameron Levin finished fourth in 29:04.8.

Big Ten Champion Wisconsin dominated the team race with a winning total of 97. Two-time defending champion Oklahoma State was second with 139 points just ahead of Colorado who was third with 144. Brigham Young finished fourth with 203 points.

The NCAA Division I cross country championships switch to Louisville for the 2012 championships but returns to Indiana State University for the 2013 championships.
