TERRE HAUTE, IND. - The Sycamore volleyball team went toe-to-toe with the Missouri State Bears in the ISU Arena Friday night but dropped a hard fought Missouri Valley Conference contest 0-3 (19-25, 19-25, 26-28) in front of 157 fans.
The loss drops ISU to 14-15 on the season and 6-11 in the Valley while Missouri State improved to 21-7 overall and 14-3 in the conference. The Sycamores will close out the regular season on Saturday night when they host the Wichita State Shockers for Senior Night. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. (ET).
Junior Morgan Dall led the Sycamore attack with 15 points while senior Stacy Qualizza added 10. Senior Shelbi Fouty had 34 assists and 15 digs for her 25th career double-double and her 12th this season. Senior Kiya James also had 15 digs while junior Shea Doran had five blocks to go along with seven kills and four assists.
The opening set was tied five times with three lead changes as both teams fought to gain control of the action. Indiana State scored the opening point on a Qualizza kill but fell behind until Fouty recorded her 57th career ace and 17th this season to give ISU a 7-6 advantage. The Bears came right back to regain the lead and opened up a five point advantage at 14-9. The Sycamores were able to cut the deficit back to three on several occasions but were not able to draw back even, dropping the opening set 25-19.
Missouri State scored the first three points of the second set and were never headed but the Sycamores kept fighting throughout before dropping another 25-19 decision and falling behind two sets to none in the game.
It was a wild finish as the third set featured 15 ties and seven lead changes. Missouri State had their biggest lead of the set at 18-15 but Indiana State came right back with four straight points on kills by Samantha Kersting, Shea Doran and Morgan Dall along with a block from Doran and Kersting to put ISU up 19-18. The Sycamores opened up their biggest lead of the set at 23-19 after another Doran block but Indiana State could not close the deal.
The Bears were able to deny Indiana State set point three times as they rallied to knot the score at 24. Junior Molly Murphy recorded her sixth kill of the set to put ISU back on top but MSU's Calli Norman knocked down a tie to even the score again at 25. Qualizza gave ISU their last lead at 26-25 on a kill off a feed from Fouty as the Bears scored the final three points of the set to take the 28-26 win and defeat ISU three sets to none.
Kaitlin Jaeger had 15 kills to pace Missouri State while Carly Thomas had 33 assists and Ashley Mason 19 digs. Norman ended the game with three blocks.
In other Missouri Valley Conference action Friday, Bradley won at Southern Illinois 3-1 (25-19, 27-29, 25-21, 25-14) while Northern Iowa swept home standing Evansville 3-0 (25-16, 25-15, 25-20), and Wichita State swept to a win at Illinois State 3-0 (25-20, 25-19, 25-20).
Indiana State remains in sixth place and holder of the final berth for the 2011 State Farm Missouri Valley Conference tournament. Bradley and Drake are right behind ISU but both need to win Saturday to equal the Sycamores' six wins. Bradley is at Evansville on Saturday while Creighton is at Drake.
