TERRE
HAUTE, Ind. - Both the Indiana State and University of
Evansville women's soccer teams had to battle the conditions on Wednesday night
in Terre Haute, as the Sycamores came away with a 1-0 victory on a night that
featured driving rain, cold temperatures and high winds at Memorial Stadium.
The win improves Indiana State to 4-12-0 on the season and 1-4-0 in Missouri
Valley Conference play, while Evansville drops to 1-11-4, 0-4-0 within the MVC.
The victory also gives ISU the head-to-head tiebreaker over UE, which could loom
large when determining seeds for the upcoming State Farm MVC Tournament.
The Sycamores played the first half with the 25 miles per hour wind at their
backs, using that advantage to take the lead in the 34th minute.
Senior Ashley Collins set up the goal-scoring play for fellow senior Jessica Rosenberg, who scored for the second straight match. Collins sent a perfectly
weighted throughball in between the Evansville central defenders, allowing
Rosenberg to run onto the pass and go 1-v-1 against Chaviel Harrison in goal
for the Aces. Rosenberg beat the keeper for the goal on the right side of the
penalty box at the near post, her second of the season.
At the half, the Sycamores led 6-2 in shots and 5-0 in shots on goal.
Indiana State did a good job of continuing to hold possession as the field was
flipped after halftime, with Evansville attacking with the wind in the second
half.
Rosenberg had a trio of chances in the opening 15 minutes of the second period,
but could not find a second goal of the match. In the 49th minute, a
deflection in the center of the Evansville penalty box fell at the foot of
Rosenberg near the left side of the goal, but the senior's chip across the face
of the goal went past the far post.
Rosenberg hit the back of the net in the 54th minute after a
touch-pass from senior Seyma Erenli, but the side official raised his flag for
offside before the shot came off her right foot. In the 57th minute,
a free kick from freshman Marisa Windisch went into the box and found the head
of junior Kourtney Vassar, with Vassar sending the ball towards goal. Rosenberg
controlled the deflection again, with her off balance attempt going over the
crossbar.
Evansville mounted pressure in the closing 15 minutes of the match, forcing
senior goalkeeper Emily Lahay to make a pair of saves, but the senior stood
tall to record her second shutout of the season and 11th of her
career. Lahay's 11 shutouts tie her with Rachel Rudzis (2004-07) for the most
in Indiana State history.
For the match, ISU led in shots (12-8) and shots on goal (6-2) with UE leading
in corner kicks (5-1). Rosenberg hit the back of the net for the second
straight, with Collins tallying her first point of the season with the assist.
Indiana State closes out the regular season on Saturday, Oct. 22, with a road
contest at Creighton. The match is set to kick off at 8:00 p.m. (ET).
