TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - The Indiana State women's basketball team saw their three-game home winning streak come to an end on Saturday, as the visiting Creighton Bluejays rode a 15-point halftime lead to a 62-53 Missouri Valley Conference victory inside Hulman Center.
With the loss, the Sycamores fall to an even 9-9 on the season and 3-4 in conference play, while the Bluejays improve to 11-7 overall and 5-2 in the MVC.
Creighton jumped out early on Indiana State, using an 11-3 run over the game's first four minutes of play to put the Sycamores in an early hole with only sophomore Taylor Whitley's 3-pointer at the 18:08 mark breaking the string of points for the Bluejays.
Whitley was the only offense for the Sycamores for much of the first half, as the sophomore guard scored ISU's first 13 points of the game. Senior Kelsie Cooley's free-throw with seven minutes remaining in the half were the first points to come from someone other than Whitley on the team, as Cooley's shot from the charity stripe cut the Creighton lead to 25-14.
Whitley finished the first half with 17 of ISU's 24 points, as the Bluejays took a 39-24 lead into the locker room. Whitley went 7-for-9 from the field in the first half, including a perfect 2-for-2 from three-point range and 1-for-1 from the line. Outside of Whitley, the Sycamores shot just 2-for-16 from the field and 0-for-6 from beyond the arc over the first 20 minutes of action.
Creighton would expand their lead to its largest margin with 19:46 remaining and again with 18:07 to go, going in front by 19 points on each occasion, with both baskets coming on shots from freshman Carli Tritz.
The Sycamores mounted one last comeback attempt after Creighton took a 45-28 lead with 18:07 to go, as Indiana State went on a 9-0 run over the game's next six minutes to cut Creighton's lead to eight points, at 45-37 with 13:15 left to play. Junior Shannon Thomas scored eight of ISU's nine points during the run, all coming on shots in the paint.
CU senior Sam Schuett ended the ISU run just 26 seconds later with a layup, pushing the Creighton lead back to 11 points, a lead that the Sycamores would never get under nine points for the remainder of the game.
For the game, Whitley led all scorers with 19 points while also dishing out four assists. Thomas also finished in double figures, with 12. After scoring 20 points on Thursday against Drake, freshman Anna Munn made her first start in an Indiana State uniform, but could never find her shot, finishing the game with three points. Junior Deja Mattox came off the bench to score four points, grab seven rebounds and pass out four assists while freshman Nikki Gunning totaled five points on perfect shooting from the field, knocking down a 3-pointer and a pair of free-throws to set her career high for scoring.
Tritz led three Bluejays that went into double figures on Saturday, totaling 18 points, five assists and six steals. Schuett (17) and freshman Sarah Nelson (11) joined Tritz in double-digits.
The Sycamores hit the road for their next three games of the season, traveling to Evansville (Thursday, Jan. 27), Southern Illinois (Saturday, Jan. 29) and Illinois State (Saturday, Feb. 5) over the next two weeks.
