WICHITA, Kan. - Four members of the Wichita State women's basketball team went into double figures on Thursday night inside Charles Koch Arena, en route to a 73-56 victory over the visiting Indiana State Sycamores.
Wichita State (8-8, 2-3 MVC) jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead over Indiana State (8-7, 2-2 MVC), knocking down their first three shots over the game's opening one minute and eight seconds. ISU would cut the Shockers lead back to just one point on a 3-pointer from junior Brittany Schoen and a layup by fellow junior Shannon Thomas in the following minutes, but WSU pushed their lead all the way to 10 points over the next five minutes, closing their 11-2 run on a layup by Haleigh Lankster.
For the remainder of the half, the Sycamores would not get closer than nine points, as the Shockers took a 39-28 lead into the halftime locker room. Senior Kelsie Cooley led Indiana State in the first half, scoring a team-high 10 points while also leading ISU with five rebounds. Schoen hit a pair of 3-pointers in the first 20 minutes for six points.
Cooley came out firing again in the second half, cutting the Wichita State lead to nine points twice on a pair of baskets to start the final 20 minutes of play. That was as close as the Sycamores would get the rest of the way, however, as the Shockers would go on a 14-0 run over the next five and a half minutes to take a commanding 55-32 lead with 12:34 to play. Schoen ended the WSU run with a pair of free-throws at the 11:56 mark.
Indiana State could never find its shooting stroke on Thursday night, as ISU went 7-for-25 (28.0%) in the first half and 8-for-34 (23.5%) in the second half, finishing the night a combined 15-for-59 (25.4%) from the field. The Sycamores did a good job of getting to the charity stripe, making 20-of-26 (76.9%) from the line.
Cooley finished the night with a team-high 16 points and eight rebounds, while Schoen also finished in double digits, with 14 points. Freshman Anna Munn led the ISU non-starters with five points and a career-high seven rebounds, while Thomas totaled eight points, five rebounds and three blocks.
Wichita State was led by Jessica Diamond, who totaled 19 points, six rebounds and five assists. Morgan Boyd (12 points), Chynna Turner (11 points) and Jazimen Gordon (10 points) also finished in double-figures for the Shockers, who as a team shot 43.1% (28-for-65) from the field.
The Sycamores will look to rebound on Sunday, when the team travels to Springfield, Mo., to take on preseason conference favorite Missouri State (13-4, 4-1 MVC). Tipoff between the Sycamores and Bears is set for 3:05 p.m.
