TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - Creighton took the only two shots on goal during Sunday's Missouri Valley Conference opener at Memorial Stadium, and both shots found the back of the net, as the visiting Bluejays knocked off the Indiana State women's soccer team by a score of 2-0 in front of 186 fans.
Creighton (8-2-2, 1-0 MVC) scored twice over the last 22 minutes of the match on steals from the Indiana State (6-4-1, 0-1 MVC) defensive backline, with one goal coming from sophomore Brittney Neumann and another from freshman Lauren Cingoranelli.
Neumann nearly gave the Bluejays an early lead just four minutes into the match, but her shot from the right side of the penalty box struck the crossbar above Sycamore goalkeeper Emily Lahay and bounced straight down in front of the goal line.
Both Indiana State and Creighton took five shots in the first half, with none of the 10 being on goal.
After Neumann scored to give Creighton the 1-0 lead, ISU nearly tied the match following a free kick just outside of the penalty box. A cross into the box from junior Alison Gasparovich found the foot of fellow junior Seyma Erenli, and Erenli volleyed the ball out of the air and into the back of the net, but the junior midfielder was ruled offside on the play.
As ISU pushed forward in search of a game-tying goal, Cingoranelli stripped the ball from the Sycamore defense and gave CU an insurance goal in the 86th minute.
In the second half, the Bluejays took six shots (two on goal) while ISU took four shots (none on goal). Creighton took one corner in each half, while Indiana State took a pair in the second stanza.
For the match, Erenli led the way with three shots, while sophomore Casey Allbright and freshman Kylie Greischar each took a pair. Senior Casey Clark and sophomore Taylor Hancock each took one shot as well.
Indiana State will hit the road in search of an MVC win next Friday, when the team travels to Springfield, Mo., to take on the Missouri State Bears. The match is set to begin at 8:00 p.m. ET.
