TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - The Indiana State women's soccer team saw their match head into the final period for the second straight Sunday, but this time the Sycamores didn't wait quite as long to pick up the game-winning goal. Sophomore Kourtney Vassar headed in a corner from junior Jessica Rosenberg just over one minute into the second overtime period to give ISU a 2-1 win at Memorial Stadium in front of 152 fans.
The corner from Rosenberg was the 15th of the day for Indiana State (5-2), who saw their winning streak move to five consecutive matches.
Indiana State controlled the pace of the match throughout the afternoon, as junior midfielders Alison Gasparovich and Seyma Erenli continually won balls in the middle of the park and ran at the Bruin defense.
The match went into the halftime break in a scoreless draw, with both teams having limited shots at the goal. ISU took four shots while Belmont took just one, none of the five total being on goal.
The Sycamores scored the opening goal just over one minute into the second half, when Gasparovich fed Erenli at the top of the 18-yard box. Erenli placed the ball just over the outstretched hands of the BU goalkeeper to put ISU up 1-0. The goal was Erenli's first of the 2010 season.
The pace of the match picked up after the Sycamores scored, with both teams finding more space in the midfield for potential attacking plays. The Bruins (1-5) would tie the score in the 70th minute, when Jane Owen Robbins scored from the left side of penalty box.
That's the way the match would stay throughout the remainder of the second half and through the first 10-minute overtime period. In the second half, Indiana State took 10 shots to Belmont's four.
The Sycamores would dominate both overtime periods, taking four shots in the first overtime before needing just one attempt in the second.
Rosenberg took the team's 15th corner of the day, and her 12th individually, from the left side of the field. The cross came six yards out from the front post where Vassar was waiting to redirect the ball into the right side of the goal. Ironically, Vassar's header landed in nearly the same spot in the goal that senior Casey Clark's double overtime winner did one week prior against Eastern Illinois.
Junior Emily Lahay improved her personal record to 5-1 in goal this season, tallying a single save in the match.
For the match, the Sycamores led in all offensive categories. ISU topped Belmont in shots (19-5), shots on goal (5-2) and corners (15-2).
The win continues ISU's best start to season in the 11-year history of the program, topping the 2003 season when the team was 3-2-2 after seven contests. ISU is now just a single win away from tying the school's longest winning streak, six games set back in 2006.
The Sycamores will look to match the program's longest winning streak when they head to Indianapolis on Friday, Sept. 17, to face the IUPUI Jaguars at 7:00 p.m. ISU will then return to Memorial Stadium on Sunday, Sept. 19, for a 1:00 p.m. contest with Bowling Green.
