TERRE HAUTE, IND. – Indiana State Director of Athletics Ron Prettyman announced today that Greg Towne (Clermont, Fla.) has accepted the position of head women's golf coach at Indiana State University. The announcement comes just three weeks after former head coach Mike Whitson resigned to become the women's coach at his alma mater, Eastern Kentucky University.
“Greg Towne brings a wealth of teaching and playing experience to our program,” Prettyman said. “He is a Midwest native and a product of one of our Missouri Valley Conference schools. He is inheriting a quality group of young ladies that excel in the classroom and on the golf course. Coach Towne is a nice addition to the Sycamore Head Coaching family.”
Towne, a graduate of Wichita State University, has 22 years of professional golf experience and 10 years teaching tour professionals and skilled players including PGA TOUR winners and major champions. He was the lead instructor at Rabito Golf from 2001-2009 and played on the European Senior Tour for the past two years. He tied for 27th at the 2009 European PGA Championship.
“Many athletic programs desire success, but few make the required effort to recruit the brightest student athletes, the most qualified coaches and have a skilled, passionate administration,” Towne said. “Ron Prettyman and his entire staff at Indiana State University are setting the bar high. As the head coach of the Women's golf program, I intend to help our student athletes set a new standard of excellence in the Missouri Valley Conference.”
Towne was a member of the Nationwide Tour for five seasons with eight top 10 finishes including a third place at the 1992 Panama City Beach Classic and 20 top 25 finishes. He qualified and made the cut at the 1997 U.S. Open at Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, Md.
As an amateur, Towne was named to the 1982 Missouri Valley All-Conference team and went on to win the 1986 Kansas State Amateur Championship.
Towne and his wife Vicki have three children: Tyler, Taylor, and Connor.
The Indiana State women's golf team opens the fall portion of their season on Sept. 11-12 at the Redbird Invitational in Normal, Ill.
