MUNCIE, Ind. - The Indiana State women's soccer team battled the Ball State Cardinals throughout the 90 minutes of their match on Sunday afternoon, falling to the Cardinals by a score of 1-0 at the BSU Soccer Field in Muncie, Ind., in front of 424 fans.
The match featured a total of 31 fouls from both teams combined, along with five yellow cards, three to Indiana State and two to Ball State.
"It was a battle out there," said head coach Erika True. "With 31 fouls, there was a lot of stoppage in play, plenty of set pieces and it continued throughout the game. That made it tough to play, but our girls did the best they could and it will prepare us for down the road."
ISU (0-2) and BSU (2-0) went scoreless through the first 45 minutes of play, with the Sycamores holding a 6-3 shot advantage at the break. The Cardinals took nearly all of the shots in the second half, however, taking eight over the final 45 minutes to ISU's one. For the game, Ball State outshot Indiana State, 11-7.
Junior Seyma Erenli and sophomore Casey Allbright both took two shots for ISU, with junior Ashley Collins, junior Morgan Wendlandt and freshman Alyssa Grell all picking up one shot. Grell recorded ISU's only shot on goal with her strike at the end of the first half.
Junior Emily Lahay played all 90 minutes in goal for the Sycamores, picking up a pair of saves and allowing one goal.
Ball State scored the lone goal of the match in the 73rd minute when Alyssa Peterson ran through the Sycamore defense and hit the back of the net from 10 yards out in the penalty box.
The Sycamores return to the field on Friday and Sunday next week, traveling to Butler on Friday for a 4:00 p.m. match before returning to Memorial Stadium on Sunday to face IPFW at 2:00 p.m.
