ST. LOUIS MO.  ? Indiana State senior Scott Keeney has received another honor from the Missouri Valley Conference with the announcement that he has been chosen to receive the 2010 Dr. Charlotte West Scholar-Athlete Award, it was announced today by Missouri Valley Conference Commissioner Doug Elgin. Illinois State's Stacey Miller also received the award.

Keeney was named the recipient of the 2010 Missouri Valley Conference male postgraduate “Emerson Excellence Award” winner on Tuesday.

The Missouri Valley Conference Faculty Athletics Representatives Committee selected Miller and Keeney from a field of league student-athletes who met the Dr. Charlotte West Scholar-Athlete Award criteria, including academic achievement, athletics excellence and service and leadership.

Keeney (Frankfort, Ind.) holds a 3.96 cumulative grade point average in mathematics while minoring in chemistry.  He was recently named a member of the CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine All-Academic District V first team.

Keeney has received the Indiana State University Presidential Scholar-Athlete of the Year award twice (2008 and 2010), an award which recognizes athletic accomplishments, academic achievements, qualities of leadership and service to the University and the community. This award also distinguishes an individual who will use the experiences of intercollegiate athletics participation to make a positive contribution to his and her profession and the community.  In 2008, he was honored as Indiana State's Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

Keeney was the first-ever cross country athlete at Indiana to earn first-team all-MVC recognition four straight years (2006-09) culminating with a fifth place finish at the 2009 championships while running with a broken back. He is also a three-time MVC scholar-athlete selection, received ESPN the Magazine all-district academic honors three times, and was named a United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Academic All-American in 2008.

A three-time team captain and two-time team MVP, he has twice earned the Indiana State cross country team Leadership Award, while helping Indiana State to two MVC team cross country titles in his four years.  A member of the MVC Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (treasurer), Keeney has spent the past year working as a House Nursing Assistant at Union Hospital in Terre Haute and has also volunteered at St. Ann's Clinic -- a clinic established for individuals with low income or no health insurance.

The senior is a three-time member of both the MVC Cross Country Scholar-Athlete team and the MVC Track & Field Scholar-Athlete team. He was an All-Great Lakes Region selection in 2008 when he finished 13th in the Great Lakes Region Cross Country Championships which qualified him for the NCAA Championships where he finished 196th.

Miller is a native of Bloomington, Ill., and achieved a cumulative 3.88 grade point average while majoring in business management at Illinois State.   A three-time MVC Scholar-Athlete selection, she competed in all 33 rounds through 11 events this season and held the second-best scoring average in the league with a 74.97. Miller finished in third place at the MVC Championship, carding a 224 (76-74-74).

Miller earned MVC Golfer of the Week honors 10 times in her career - the fourth-most of any player in league history.  She carded the lowest single-round score of her career this year at the Napa River Grill Cardinal Cup, where she shot a three-under par 69. She led Illinois State with 27 rounds in the 70s or below this season.

During her four years at ISU, Miller helped the Redbird golf team to three-straight MVC championships, a feat accomplished only one other time in league history.  The two-time team captain was the 2009 MVC Championship medalist and earned all-conference honors three-straight seasons.

Miller served as a Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) member from 2008-2009 and has been active in community service at Illinois State while also taking part in the State Farm/Missouri Valley Conference “Just Read” program.

The first-ever recipient of the Honda Award of Merit in 1996 for outstanding achievement in women's collegiate athletics, Dr. Charlotte West was a driving force for more than 40 years in the area of advancement of women's sports.

On June 30, 1998, she retired from Southern Illinois University-Carbondale, after serving in the capacities of head coach, associate athletics director, interim athletics director and senior woman administrator during her 41 years with the Missouri Valley Conference-member institution.  West coached five women's sports from 1957-75 and, in 1982, was among the first group of women inducted into the SIUC Athletics Hall of Fame.

During her tenure at SIUC, she became the first female member of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and later served on the organization's board of directors.  West was also a president of the Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW).  In 1991, she was presented with the Administrator of the Year Award by the National Association of Collegiate Women Administrators.  West also received the Administrator of the Year Award, given by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association.
