TERRE HAUTE, IND. ? Indiana State senior Erica Moore had a record setting day at Marks Field Friday as she ran away with the women's 400 meter hurdles with a time of 57.20. That is the seventh fastest time in the nation and the fifth fastest in the East this year.
The time also broke the Marks Field record of 58.41 which was set by Melinda Sallins of Missouri State in 1996. Moore was just 17 hundredths of a second off her school record time of 57.03 which she set in 2008.
Southern Illinois leads the women's team standings after the first day of competition with 56 points with Michigan State second with 42, Indiana State third with 37, and Indiana fourth with 36 points. In the Missouri Valley-Big Ten challenge, the MVC leads 93-78 over the Big Ten.
Michigan State leads the men's team standings after the first day of competition with 58 points with Southern Illinois second at 45, Indiana third with 41 and Indiana State fourth with 30 points. In the Missouri Valley-Big Ten Challenge, the Big Ten leads 99-75 over the Missouri Valley.
Stacia Weatherford ran her first 400 meter hurdle event of the outdoor season and finished fifth in 1:01.74 while Tori Stone was seventh in 1:03.71. Both of those efforts were personal bests.
Dexter Childress led the Sycamore effort in the men's 400 meter hurdles by finishing fifth with a time of 56.42. Tykeen Fulton finished seventh (56.67) while Robert Webb was ninth (58.29) and DeJuan Mitchell 10th (59.20).
Allison Malone led the Sycamore in the women's 5,000 meter run as she finished 10th with a time of 17:53.35. In the men's 5,000 meters, Jeremiah Vaughan finished ninth in 14:41.32 while Craig Padgett was 10th in 14:48.2.
Both of Indiana State's 4x100 meter relay teams finished third in their respective races. The men's team of Steven Swinford, Roberts, Justin Baxtron, and Andrew Stull had a season best time of 41.54 in a race where the difference between first and fourth was just a half-second. The women's team of Jaquelle Spencer, Lauren Martin, Jasmyn Hudgins, and Violet Nwordu finished in 46.93 and just missed a season best time.
In the men's field events Friday, Brandon Pounds set a new personal best in the men's discus with a throw of 172'-4” (52.53m) in finishing fourth. The mark is the eighth best in Indiana State history. ISU's Dexter Childress also had a personal best in the discus with a distance of 85'-7” (26.10m). Lyle Nolcox also set a new personal best with a second place finish in the men's hammer throw with a distance of 188'-10” (57.57m).
In the women's field events, Kelsey Hanley finished sixth in the women's hammer throw with a distance of 175'-0” (53.33m) with Felisha Johnson taking eighth at 172'-0” (52.43m). Sarah Baker had a personal best in the event with a distance of 108'-3” (33.00m). Hanley was seventh in the discus with a distance of 142'-0” (43.29m) with Johnson ninth at 136'-7” (41.64m).
Competition resumes at 9:30 a.m. (ET) Saturday with the shot put and javelin. Action continues at Marks Field through 3 p.m. (ET) Saturday. The quadrangular is free to the public.
