AMES, IOWA ? Indiana State senior Erica Moore has provisionally qualified for the Pentathlon for the second straight year at the Iowa State Classic, finishing second overall on Thursday with 3,928 points. Junior Rachel Posey finished 10th overall with 2,966 points, and senior Annie Smith was 13th overall with 2,870 points.
Moore was the first collegian to finish with former Minnesota athlete Liz Roehrig, who was competing unattached, winning the pentathlon with 4,073 points. Carolyn Lewis of Arkansas State was third with 3,672 points. Two other unattached competitors, Iowa graduate Tammilee Kerr and Boston College graduate Tiana Riel, were fourth (3,637) and fifth (3,621), respectively.
Moore placed fifth in four of the five events but broke through a dominating victory in the 800 meters to claim the provisional mark. The senior won the 800 meters in 2:09.19 with Posey taking second in 2:23.09, her best finish of the day.
Moore also set a new personal best in the shot put with a throw of 36'-5.5” (11.11m). She also ran 9.00 in the 60 meter hurdles, had a jump of 5'-4.25” (1.63m) in the high jump, and a jump of 17'-8.25” (5.39m) in the long jump.
Posey ran 10.32 in the 60 meter hurdles, had a jump of 4'-9” in the high jump, a throw of 28'-0.75” in the shot put, and a jump of 16'-0.5” in the long jump.
Smith had her best performance of the day in the high jump as she finished second in the event with jump of 5'-6.5” (1.69m). She also ran 10.10 in the 60 meter hurdles, had a throw of 26'-9.75” (8.17m) in the shot put, a jump of 15'-9” (4.80m) in the long jump, and ran 2:54.40 in the 800 meters.
The men's heptathlon completed four of the seven events on Thursday with Indiana State freshman Dexter Childress sitting in 14th with 2,142 points. Childress ran 7.60 in the 60 meters, had a jump of 19'-6” (5.94m) in the long jump, a throw of 28'-6.25” (8.69m) in the shot put, and a jump of 5'-3.75” (1.62m) in the high jump.
Former Indiana State athlete and current volunteer assistant coach Anthony Bertoli is competing unattached in the heptathlon and currently sits in 13th place.
The heptathlon wraps up Friday morning with the 60 meter hurdles, pole vault, and 1,000 meter run.
