TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - The Indiana State women's soccer team led the Missouri Valley Conference with five overall selections to the conference's Scholar-Athlete Team on Tuesday, with the Sycamores earning a conference-high four first-team picks and one honorable-mention honor.
Senior Casey Clark and juniors Alison Gasparovich, Emily Lahay and Morgan Wendlandt all earned selection to the first team, while sophomore Casey Allbright was voted honorable mention. The five scholar-athlete selections is the most in school history for the Sycamores, topping the 2009 squad that earned four total picks (three first-team, one honorable-mention).
Senior Casey Clark scored two goals and tallied one assist during the 2010 season, scoring both her goals in ISU's 2-1 double-overtime victory over Eastern Illinois on Sept. 5, with her second coming with just 26 seconds left in the match. Clark's assist also came in double overtime, as she assisted on Alison Gasparovich's goal that sent ISU to a 1-0 win over Drake on Oct. 8. For the year, ISU's lone senior in 2010 put seven of her 11 shots on frame. A member of the MVC Honor Roll in 2009-10, Clark currently holds a 3.97 GPA while majoring in Financial Services.
Junior Alison Gasparovich set several program records in 2010, including topping the record books with nine goals during the year. Gasparovich became just the fourth Sycamore to earn first-team all-conference following the season after tallying 22 points (on nine goals and four assists) in 2010, tying for the second-most points in school history. Gasparovich was named to the CoSIDA/ESPN Academic All-District V Team while also earning the Commissioner's Academic Excellence Award in 2009-10. The junior midfielder currently carries a 3.72 GPA in Nursing. Gasparovich was also a first-team scholar-athlete selection last season, joining 2009 senior Erin Bianchi and fellow junior Morgan Wendlandt as the only two-time first-team selections in school history.
Junior Emily Lahay was also key in the Sycamores' on-field success during the year, setting ISU records with five shutouts and 1.00 goals against average between the posts for Indiana State. Lahay was an honorable-mention all-conference selection in 2010, after going 8-9-1 in goal for ISU with 55 saves during the year. With Lahay providing the leadership, ISU also allowed their fewest overall goals and goals against average as a team for a single season. Lahay earned the Commissioner's Academic Excellence Award in 2009-10, holding a 3.93 GPA while majoring in Elementary Education.
Junior Morgan Wendlandt scored a pair of game-winning goals for the Sycamores during the 2010 season, with her goals against IPFW on Aug. 29 and Northern Iowa on Oct. 17. Wendlandt placed third on the team with 35 shots during the year, while 12 shots being on frame. The junior defender was part of the Indiana State defense that allowed the fewest overall goals and goals against average as a team for a single season. Wendlandt currently holds a 3.97 GPA in Pre-Business/Marketing and has earned first-team scholar-athlete for the second straight season, joining 2009 senior Erin Bianchi and fellow junior Alison Gasparovich as the only two-time first-team selections in school history. Wendlandt also earned the Commissioner's Academic Excellence Award in 2009-10.
Sophomore Casey Allbright earned second-team all-conference and was selected to the all-tournament team following the 2010 season, where Allbright made the transition for attack to defense for the Sycamores.
